The Schandtauber (front) flows into the Tauber (back right)

The Schandtauber is a 13 km long left and southwest tributary of the Tauber . It flows mainly to the northeast.

The name of the river, first recorded in 1317, was Old High German " Schantauber " with the meaning of short Tauber .

geography

course

The Schandtauber rises on the Hohenlohe plain , about one kilometer south of Blaufelden - Gammesfeld in a smaller scrap of forest in front of the alder wood . It initially flows in an easterly direction. After about one kilometer, directly after crossing under the K 2513 from Hausen am Bach to Gammesfeld south of Rot am See -Hertershofen, the river changes its direction of flow to the north. It flows east past Hertershofen and changes direction to the northwest shortly after crossing under the K 2677 at the edge of the Gammesfeld Muschelkalkbruch . The river changes here to the area of the district Blaufelden. It passes the village of Gammesfeld in the northeast. Shortly afterwards, the Schandtauber runs from the left and south to the Heufelgraben , whereupon it continues in a northerly direction. After about half a kilometer, the Langenkelchgraben flows into it, again from the left . The Schandtauber now turns its course to the northeast and shortly afterwards, about half a kilometer southeast of Standorf , in a small arc to the east.

The dry stream bed in front of Bettenfeld

It now crosses the border from Baden-Wuerttemberg to Bavaria and passes a quarry on its left side, opposite its small slope is now wooded here. To the north it runs through the parish village of Bettenfeld from Rothenburg ob der Tauber , flows in a now pronounced valley with hillside forest past the Obermühle and then changes its direction to the northeast at the Mittelmühle . Then it passes the district of Burgstall , which lies above the upper left edge of the slope, further down the valley the Hollermühle and the Hammerschmiede , both of which are on their left bank. Immediately afterwards it passes the Schandhof over a left, north-western rebound slope and then continues northeast to the Schmelzmühle near Rothenburg, where it finally flows into the Tauber from the left, less than half a kilometer south of the hospital bastion of the medieval town above the right Tauber slope .

Catchment area

The Schandtauber drains 44.5 km², which lie entirely in the natural area Hohenloher and Haller level , in the sub-areas of the south-western and north-eastern Rothenburger Landwehr ; a small gusset in the mouth area last in the Upper Taubertal .

The catchment area has roughly the shape of a north-south oriented ellipse between - in the north - the forest center of the large-scale high wood south of Spielbach and - in the south - the hamlet of Hegenau von Rot am See . In the west, its border runs between Speckheim and Funkstatt, in the middle lies Leuzendorf and at Bettenfeld it stretches on both sides of the lower reaches to form a north-eastern tube over four kilometers long, but nowhere only one and a half kilometers wide, to the mouth.

In the southwest and west, the catchment area borders the Brettach , which drains over the Jagst to the Neckar , so there is a large watershed here. All other competitors drain like the Schandtauber directly or indirectly to the Tauber . In the northwest it is the Reutalbach that reaches this important tributary of the Main via the (Weikersheimer) Vorbach ; in the north the Herrgottsbach , which it reaches in Creglingen, also quite far in the north; in the northeast of the (Rothenburger) Vorbach and the even shorter Blinkbach . Continuing clockwise, the catchment areas of Wethbach and Lohrbach join in the east beyond the underflow hose of the Schandtauber , in the southeast and east finally that of the Rohrbach near Hausen am Bach.

Because the Schandtauber flows in a karstified landscape, the underground drainage is very important; therefore the effective catchment area boundary can differ significantly from the valley divide lines that can be seen in the landscape. It is known, for example, that the Brettach tributary Wiesenbach loses water to the Schandtauber through seepage .

Tauber river system

Schandtauberhöhle

The dammed karst spring in Bettenfeld, which the Schandtauber delivers most of the water.

While the Schandtauber above ground is only a small clot of water up to that point, at Bettenfeld underground water from a powerful karst spring emerges in a cave system . For this reason, some only see the origin of the wicked magicians here. Before the water comes into daylight, it already flows a few kilometers under the earth's surface in cavities with a cross-section of 3 m². They form the largest known Muschelkalkhöhle in southern Germany; it has been under nature protection since 1984. It is designated as Geotope 571H001 by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . See also the list of geotopes in the Ansbach district .

Mills

A total of seven mills were operated on the lower reaches of the steep slope of the Schandtauber , including the upper and middle mill, the Hollermühle and the hammer mill. The hammer forge was founded in the 17th century, here in 1825 three overshot water wheels drove three hammers. A part of the water was diverted here through a weir in order to obtain the necessary head to drive the water wheels. Iron tools such as plows, scythes, shovels, axes, etc. were manufactured there.

biosphere

Willows , black alders and ash trees prefer to grow on the banks of the river . The clean water ( water quality class II) of the Schandtauber is a very good habitat for fish and other water dwellers. So come in her u. a. the brown trout , the Mühlkoppe as well as the stone crab and the caddis fly larvae . Cave dwellers such as cave snails and bats live in the cave system of the evil magicians .
