The vineyard in the Gewann Ackerberg near Ebertsbronn is the oldest site with pigeon black vines.

In Tauberschwarz is an indigenous red variety from the Tauber - and Vorbach in the wine region Tauberfranken . The variety is old and its origin is unknown. As a "regionally typical grape variety", Tauberschwarz has been included in the Ark of Taste by the Slow Food organization . The Tauberschwarz produces light, fruity red wines with a slightly light color, in ripe, good years also garnet red, then also a spicy kind. The berries only have thin skin and are therefore sensitive to gray mold rot ( Botrytis cinerea ).

history

Tauberschwarz was first mentioned by name in a decree of the Hochstift Würzburg from 1726 during the reign of Count Karl Ludwig von Hohenlohe zu Weikersheim . In the middle of the last century, vineyards with pigeon black could only be found in the vineyards of Laudenbach (Vorbachtal) and Weikersheim (Taubertal). In the 1950s, the vineyards were cleared with pigeon black as part of the reorganization of the vineyards, so that it was considered extinct until 1959, before the last 400 remaining vines were found in a vineyard in Ebertsbronn in the Vorbach valley.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the state teaching and research institute for viticulture and fruit growing in Weinsberg tried to revive the variety through breeding. The application for entry in the list of varieties was made in 1987, whereupon the clone We 600 was registered in the spring of 1994. Since October 1996, the grape variety has been approved in the Stuttgart administrative region for the Main-Tauber district and two communities in the Hohenlohe district .
