music

Matthias Loibner's work covers a broad stylistic spectrum in which orally transmitted music from various origins plays a central role. These include Austrian folk music and new folk music (in his early days as a hurdy-gurdy player with the group Wullaza), world and ethnomusic (in collaboration with Nataša Mirković-De Ro , Sandy Lopicic Orkestar , Ross Daly , deishovida , The Big Five, Linsey Pollak , Tunji Beier ) and electronic music . Concert and study trips take Matthias Loibner to Africa, Australia, Japan and America.

Another focus of his work is the interpretation of original compositions for hurdy-gurdy from the French Baroque a . a. with the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges, Le Concert Spirituel, Les Eclairs de Musique, Les Musiciens de Saint Julien, Tobie Miller and Riccardo Delfino.

Loibner also works in the fields of new music , experimental music , avant-garde , improvised music and jazz (e.g. as a soloist or with Jörg Mikula, Franz Hautzinger , Tunji Beier and others). It combines the hurdy-gurdy with its own setup of live effects and live looping software on the computer.

As a musician and composer Loibner worked together with Ernst M. Binder , Henning Mankell , Dimiter Gotscheff and Sandy Lopicic at the theater.

In 2008 he realized the multimedia live music installation " Time Project " with four European bands (Snö, Mitsoura, Palyrria, familha Artús). In 2009 he arranged the " Winterreise " by Franz Schubert and Wilhelm Müller for vocals and hurdy-gurdy.

Since 1994 Matthias Loibner has been teaching hurdy-gurdy technique , baroque music and improvisation at festivals and courses in several European countries, as well as in Japan and Australia, among others together with Tobie Miller at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. In 1997, together with Riccardo Delfino, he wrote the textbook hurdy-gurdy games

Matthias Loibner has been working with the instrument maker Wolfgang Weichselbaumer since 1995 on the further development of the Alto hurdy-gurdy, among other things on the multi-channel electronic acceptance. Since 2004 he has been working with Christophe Coin (Ensemble Baroque de Limoges) and Wolfgang Weichselbaumer on a project to reconstruct the organ eggs (lira organizzata) for the re-performance and first recording of the works composed for this by Joseph Haydn , Ignaz Josef Pleyel and others.

In 2007 and 2008 Loibner was curator of the Ö1 hurdy-gurdy festival at Radiokulturhaus Vienna.
