Sandy Lopicic (original Lopičić ; born May 5, 1973 in Stuttgart ) is a Bosnian - Austrian theater director , musician , actor and film composer . He is the founder and director of the Sandy Lopicic Orkestar.

Life

Lopicic spent the first 14 years of his life in the Swabian town of Esslingen am Neckar . His parents come from Sarajevo ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ). He moved there in 1987 and attended music secondary school for four years, in Neda Stanković's piano class. In 1991 he came to Graz to study piano (classical) in the class of Moscow's Alexander Satz . There he lives with the actress Susanne Konstanze Weber and his three children.

Artistic activity

As a young piano student, Sandy Lopicic played three times a week as a solo entertainer in the Graz Theatercafé to finance his studies. During the day he worked as a ballet répétiteur in the ballet school of the Graz Opera House . In 1992 he worked as an extra in Roman Haubenstock-Ramati's opera America .

Shortly thereafter (1995) Lopicic got his first engagement as musical director and composer in the United Stages Graz, including the incidental music for the premiere of where he director Marc Günther Wolfgang Bauer People Factory wrote and 1998 on the side of the director Ernst M. Binder the Black Rider arranged by Tom Waits on a wild Balkan sound for a 15-piece band. A year later, this band formed the Sandy Lopicic Orkestar , which was signed to the world music label Network Medien for two albums ( Border Confusion and Balkea ) in 2000 and toured Europe until it was dissolved in 2006.

In 2007 he founded his 12-member formation Sandy Lopicic Superstvar (in Bosnian as much as "super thing").

In 2000, Sandy Lopicic and the Bulgarian director Dimiter Gotscheff met for the first time to rehearse Dejan Dukovski's powder keg for the Styrian autumn . Lopicic also got to know the actress Susanne Konstanze Weber. Today the couple have two children together. Sandy Lopicic has a daughter from his first marriage to the Bosnian pianist Lejla Fitozovic.

Lopicic saw Gotscheff as his great role model and began to be interested in directing. His first independent production ( one flew over the cuckoo's nest , 2003) at the Schauspielhaus Graz was a great success. This was followed by works in the directing duo Pan Danubia (2004–2007) with Cornelia Crombholz at the Volkstheater Wien , Staatstheater Nürnberg and Graz. Above all, Lorca's blood wedding bore Lopicic's musical signature. His staging of the original version of the White Horse Inn for the Linz State Theater in January 2008 , based on historical recordings and an original piano reduction from 1930, also caused a sensation .

After Lieutenant von Inishmore ( Burgtheater Vienna 2002), Gotscheff and Lopicic did not get together again until 2008 in Berlin to rehearse the powder keg at the Deutsches Theater / Berliner Festspiele. Since 2005, Sandy Lopicic has increasingly used the accordion instead of the piano in his stage music . In 2011, Lopicic set Gotscheff's production of the world premiere of Peter Handke's Immer noch Sturm ( Thalia Theater Hamburg and Salzburg Festival ) to music in a duo (accordion and hurdy-gurdy ) with Matthias Loibner .

Sandy Lopicic was also responsible for the music in the last work by Grand Master Dimiter Gotscheff , Heiner Müller's Zement ( Residenztheater Munich , 2013).

Known for the unbridled appearances with his Balkan Orkestar, Lopicic tries to bring the same temperament to the theater stage, and staged far from psychological theater.

Sandy Lopicic's production of Franz Kafka's Castle premiered in February 2013 at the Salzburg State Theater. The performance was musically accompanied by Matthias Loibner and the Viennese duo Die Strottern .

Teaching

Sandy Lopicic has been working as a senior lecturer (lecturer) for theater music at the Graz University of Art since 2011 .

Musical influences

Sandy Lopicic studied and graduated in concert piano (classical). During the war years in the former Yugoslavia , however, his interest in the folk music of his home region grew. This was also the time when Lopicic began composing music for theater productions. More and more often he used both Roma songs, South Slavic folk tunes , as well as Balkan and circus music motifs and arranged them for various line-ups. Sandy Lopicic allowed improvisational jazz influences from his musicians and created a new, own sound from it, apart from the traditional way of playing Balkan folklore or Serbian brass music . Lopicic mostly uses old melodies (or texts) from the Balkans (Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Russia etc.) and processes them with "his own means". But there are also original compositions in Sandy Lopicic's repertoire.
