Wajdi Mouawad

Wajdi Mouawad OC ( Arabic وجدي معوض; Waǧdī Muʿawwaḍ; * October 16, 1968 in Dair al-Qamar , Lebanon) is a Lebanese- Canadian writer , actor and director . He writes in French and lives in France.

Life

The Maronite Mouawad family emigrated from Lebanon to France in 1976 and from there to Québec ( Canada ) in 1983 . Here Wajdi Mouawad received an acting training at the École Nationale de Théâtre du Canada . He founded and ran a theater in Montréal and became one of the leading new talents in the French-Canadian language area. Burns premiered in Montréal in 2003 under the title “Incendies” . As the second part of a planned tetralogy, it was translated into German. For the first part (“Littoral” - “Coastal Area”) Mouawad received the Prix ​​Molière in 2005 as best Francophone author. European theater festivals such as the Festival d'Avignon (with the tetralogy Le sang des promesses ) or the Bonn Biennale have perceived Wajdi Mouawad as an inspiring young author. He became known in Germany with the German-language premiere of Burns . Mouawad was appointed artistic advisor for the Festival d'Avignon, cycle 63, for 2009. Burns was filmed in French in 2010 by Canadian director Denis Villeneuve as The Woman Who Sings - Incendies . The film was nominated for the Oscar 2011 in the category Best Foreign Language Film .

Mouawad was artistic director at the Théâtre français du Center national des Arts d'Ottawa from 2007 to 2012 . Since September 2011 he has been artistically involved in the Grand T , the theater in the Loire-Atlantique department in Nantes . Since April 2016 he has been director of the Théâtre national de la Colline in Paris.
