Georg Schmiedleitner (born January 2, 1957 in Linz ) is a director and theater manager living in Linz .

Life

After graduating from high school with the Matura , Georg Schmiedleitner studied German literature, history and theater studies in Vienna. From 1983 to 1989 he was artistic director of the small and experimental stage Spielstatt Junge Bühne and co-founder of the Phönix Theater in Linz and from 1989 to 1996 artistic director there.

Since 1996 he has worked as a freelance director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the Burgtheater Vienna, the Theater in der Josefstadt , Weimar, Klagenfurt, Oldenburg and Bern, the Schauspielhaus Graz , the Landestheater Linz and the Schauspielhaus Hamburg . Later he worked continuously at the State Theater in Nuremberg (including Margareta di Napoli , stories from the Vienna Woods and others), at the National Theater Mannheim (including Maria Stuart , Faust ), at the Graz Schauspielhaus (including world premieres of Franzobel, Hirschen and Princess Eisenherz ), at the Volkstheater Vienna , (including Grillparzer , King Ottokars Glück und Ende ) and at the Leipzig Theater .

Together with Chris Müller , Georg Schmiedleitner is also the artistic director of the “Theater Hausruck”, a theater initiative that deals with regional contemporary history and current socio-political issues with lay people and professional actors and artists. In the period from 2005 to 2010, the team played on various locations in the Hausruck region in Upper Austria.

His staging of the play The Candidate by Carl Sternheim at the Vienna Akademietheater helped him achieve a “coup”. Based on the story of the rise of a rich populist to become the winner of the election, it shows that a lot “was exactly the same in 1914 as it is now”.
