The publishing house of the authors in the legal form of a GmbH & Co. KG is a publishing house for theater plays in German-speaking countries and an agency for film, television and radio play authors . The registered office is in Frankfurt am Main .

history

The publisher of the authors was established in 1969 by some authors and former Suhrkamp - lecturers for a model of co-determination established. Since then he has represented around 300 theater, radio play, film and television authors and translators. Since 1980 the publisher has also had a small book program, which consists mainly of theoretical writings on theater and film as well as the editions of the “Theater Library”, the “Film Library” and the annual anthology of children's and youth theater pieces “Playground”.

One focus of the publishing house is the discovery and promotion of new authors. The authors themselves are the shareholders of the GmbH and determine the economic and programmatic development of the publisher in the shareholders' meeting . Not least thanks to the commitment of well-known authors, the publishing house has been able to maintain its independence from large media groups to this day.

A history of the publishing house from the point of view of the former Suhrkamp employees appeared in 2011 as a chronicle of the editors , in which they describe their path from the "revolt of the editors" to their own publishing house.

Following the example of the Verlag der Automobiles, some author-filmmakers founded the Filmverlag der Automobiles in Munich in 1971 .
