The Harpfnerwandtunnel is a single-lane road tunnel between the villages of Mayrhofen and Ginzling in the Zillertal . It serves as a fast connection between the villages, which can also be reached via a gorge stretch of the Zillertalstrasse . A traffic light system in front of the tunnel portals controls the passage. The difference in height between the portals is around 190 m, which corresponds to an average gradient of 7.3%.

In July 1965, the 2590 m long Harpfnerwand Tunnel was attacked, through which the dangerous, narrow Dornauberg Gorge, unsuitable for heavy transport, can be bypassed. This bypass enabled access to the construction site of the Schlegeis storage facility .

In 2011, the two-lane and winter-safe expansion of the parallel gorge section was completed as the B 169, which has made the tunnel less important and it was even feared that it would be closed.

From May 2019 to probably spring 2021, the tunnel has been closed to public transport due to modernization to increase the safety standard , but Verbund AG's works and construction site traffic will also be guided through the tunnel during this time. After completion of the renovation work, which will be financed by the State of Tyrol and Verbund AG, the tunnel will be open to public transport again - with the exception of heavy traffic.
