The Zillertalstraße (B 169) is a state road in Austria . It has a length of 39.5 km and leads from the Inn Valley through the Zillertal to Mayrhofen and from there through the Dornauberg Gorge to Dornauberg-Ginzling .

The 13.3 km long section from Ginzling through the Zemmtal to the Schlegeisspeicher no longer belongs to the B 169, but is a toll road of the Tauern Touristik GmbH . From the Breitlahner toll station, the road leads in a single lane over eight hairpin bends and four natural stone tunnels with traffic lights every 15 minutes to the Schlegeis storage facility. The road overcomes a height difference of around 1200 m (of which 1100 m on the section between Mayrhofen and the Schlegeis reservoir).

history

The Zillerthalerstraße between Straß and Mayrhofen was built from 1907 as part of a road construction program as a competing street . In Austrian legal language, competition refers to the joint financing of a project by various institutions, each of which assumes a percentage of the maintenance costs specified by law. In this case it took over

  • the Austrian Empire 35%
  • the state of Tyrol 35%
  • the neighboring communities 30%

the planned construction costs of 99,000 guilders.

The Zillertalstraße belonged starting from 1 January 1973 to the network of federal roads in Austria . According to the Federal Roads Act of that time, this road was to be continued on the Pfitscher Joch up to the state border with Italy .

On May 15, 2002 the spelling of the present state road was changed by the Tyrolean state parliament to Zillertalstraße .

In November 2011, the expansion of the gorge route between the Hochsteg district in Finkenberg and the south portal of the Harpfnerwand tunnel was completed. The new route through the Dornauberg Gorge now enables the single-lane tunnel to be bypassed and replaces it in the course of the road. The construction time for this section between Mayrhofen and Ginzling was 14 years.

B169  Like the other former federal highways, Zillertalstrasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
