Course of the road

The Hochkönig Straße ( B 164 ) - Hochkönigstraße in Tyrol - is a state road in Austria .
course
The Hochkönigstraße is 75 km long, the first section being a relatively insignificant mountain road, the second being the most important inner-Austrian west-east connection:
- Beginning in Bischofshofen in the Salzach valley , it first leads between Hochkönig and Dientener Bergen along to the Dientner Sattel ( 1342 m above sea level ) and further down into the Saalach valley to Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer .
- Beyond the Saalach, the road leads in the Leogang Valley between Leoganger Steinbergen and Loferer Steinbergen in the north and the Kitzbühel Alps in the south via Leogang up to the Grießenpass ( 975 m above sea level ), and via Fieberbrunn back down into the Leukental to St. Johann in Tirol .
On the last section the road runs parallel to the Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn .
The Hochkönig Straße is very popular with motorcyclists in summer. The winding route from Bischofshofen to Mühlbach and the two pass heights of Dientner Sattel and Filzensattel are particularly important here.
history
Since 1948, three sections of today's Hochkönig Strasse in the state of Salzburg have been classified as 2nd order state roads:
- The 9.6 km long Mühlbacher Straße between Bischofshofen and Mühlbach
- The 5.7 km long Almer Straße between Alm and Saalfelden
- The 7.1 km long Leoganger Straße between Saalfelden and Leogang
With effect from July 1, 1962, the last two streets mentioned were extended:
- The Almer road was by 8.2 km to Hinterthal extended.
- The Leoganger Straße was extended by 11.0 km to the Tyrolean border at the Grießenpass.
The middle section of the route between Mühlbach and Hinterthal was declared a rival road by the state law of April 11, 1962 . In Austrian legal language, competition refers to the joint financing of a project by various institutions, each of which assumes a percentage of the maintenance costs specified by law. In this case it took over
- the province of Salzburg 65.00%
- the municipality of Alm 8.00%
- the community of Bischofshofen 2.25%
- the community of Dienten am Hochkönig 8.00%
- the community of Mühlbach am Hochkönig 8.00%
- the municipality of Saalfelden 3.75%
- the Austrian Federal Forests 5.00%
On the Tyrolean side, Fieberbrunner Strasse from Sankt Johann to the state border was declared State Road I Order by the Tyrolean Road Act of September 28, 1950 and designated as L 1 .
The Hochkönig Straße has been part of the network of federal highways in Austria since January 1st, 1973 .
