Lower Austria

The Laaer road B6 is a country road B and former federal highway in Lower Austria . It runs over a length of 46 kilometers from Korneuburg via Ernstbrunn to Hanfthal near Laa an der Thaya . In connection with the Vienna outer ring expressway , it represents an important connection between Vienna and the Weinviertel .

history

The road from Korneuburg to Laa was completed in 1842. It connected the Weinviertel with the train station in Korneuburg and the capital Vienna. Although this road was of great economic importance for the neighboring communities, the Weinviertel kknö succeeded. Government councilor and district chief Gregor Mayerhofer in Korneuburg struggled to wrest a financial share in the construction costs from the communities. Since November 16, 1842, the tolls customary in the country had to be paid at the toll stations in Laa, Eichenbrunn and Wetzleinsdorf. "The importance of this new road, the public benefit of which is enhanced by the meeting with the Vienna railway station in Korneuburg and the roads to Brno and Schloßhof that join before Vienna to Floridsdorf, has already received greater recognition."

Truck driving ban in Tresdorf.

The road "from Vienna-Stockerauer Straße next Korneuburg via Wetzleinsdorf , Niederleis , Gaubitsch to Laa" is one of the 17 roads that were declared to be Lower Austrian regional roads in 1866.

After the annexation of Austria , this road was converted into a 1st order state road on April 1, 1940, as part of the standardization of the road system , which was designated as LIO 20 and ended in Mährisch Kromau .

The Laaer road belonged starting from 1 January 1951 to the network of federal roads in Austria . In 2002 it was transferred to the state administration.

When the Vienna outer ring expressway was opened to traffic on January 31, 2010, a truck traffic prohibition of 3.5 t or more came into force on Laaer Straße in the direction of Laa an der Thaya with the additional sign "except for journeys to the destination west of the A5 and B46" . There is no truck traffic ban in the direction of Korneuburg. Truck driving bans on Lower Austria Atlas. This is to prevent trucks who are exiled from the toll from using Laaer Straße to bypass the toll . Just a few weeks after the S1 and A5 were opened to traffic, it was found that the truck traffic ban was toothless, as the B6 is used extensively by trucks who are exempt from tolls. The Korneuburg district authority announced that further measures will be evaluated.

The first meeting in the history of Laaer Strasse took place on Wednesday, May 27, 2015. At the entrance to Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf and at the entrance to Tresdorf, the road was closed from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. The participants wanted to point out the high volume of traffic and the urgently needed relief through the planned bypass.

Traffic volume

Traffic increase 2013-2019

The traffic on Laaer Straße shows a dynamic increase and increases steadily towards Korneuburg. An automatic permanent counting station of the state of Lower Austria at 3.65 kilometers has been recording the traffic volume at this point since November 18, 2009.

The average daily traffic volume on a working day reached 6848 vehicles / 24 h in 1998, but already 10,687 vehicles / 24 h in 2019.

In the localities of Tresdorf and Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf, the volume of traffic is even higher due to additional journeys within the localities and to other state roads, so that well over 10,000 vehicles are already recorded per working day. The proportion of trucks is around 7%, i.e. around 750 trucks per day.

The hoped-for traffic relief communicated by politicians through the opening of the north autobahn and the Weinviertel expressway did not materialize in view of the traffic figures from the automatic counting point at km 3.65. Both car and truck traffic continued to grow strongly.

Expansion (chronology, selection)

Two of over 750 trucks a day on the B6 in Harmannsdorf
  • 1842 - Laaer Strasse is completed
  • 1996 - Opening of the Au bypass .
  • September 5, 1998 - Opening of the roundabout junction B305 (connection to the also opened junction A22 Korneuburg-West)
  • September 20, 2007 - Eichenbrunn bypass opened
  • January 31, 2010 - The Korneuburg Nord junction is open to traffic to the S1, which has also been opened

Further bypasses desired by the population to relieve the localities along the B6 will be implemented depending on the future traffic development.

Harmannsdorf and Tresdorf bypass

In Tresdorf and Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf , there is an average traffic volume of over 11,000 vehicles per day due to the additional traffic flows on various state roads. For 2020, 13,000 vehicles per day are forecast in this area. The planned Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf and Tresdorf bypass will reduce traffic to less than half, and an effective truck driving ban can be implemented for the first time. The bypass will also reduce traffic congestion in the villages of Seebarn, Stetten and Kleinrötz.
In Tresdorf and Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf, the desire for a quick implementation of the planned bypass has therefore become louder and louder in recent years. In 2005, more than 1,300 signatures were collected together for the rapid implementation of the bypass of the two villages and handed over to Governor Erwin Pröll . Pröll also promised his increased support for the implementation of the bypass. The route of the bypass was declared a state road planning area by ordinance in 2009. The submission project was completed at the end of September 2012. Governor Erwin Pröll gave the official go-ahead for the construction of the bypass road on February 21, 2013. The start of construction for the six-kilometer bypass is planned for the end of 2020.

B6  Like the other former federal highways, Laaer Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
