The Weinviertel expressway S3 runs from the Stockerau junction to Hollabrunn and leads through the Weinviertel . As an extension of the Danube bank motorway A22 and together with the existing Weinviertler Straße B303, it represents a connection from Stockerau via Hollabrunn to the Czech border near Znojmo . As part of the European route 59 , it connects Vienna and Prague, among others .

Route sections

The route from the Stockerau junction to Stockerau-Nord is a motorway in terms of road traffic law and was originally part of the A22. The rest of the route is signposted as a road with a top speed of 100 km / h.

The route of the B303 from Stockerau-Nord to Hollabrunn-Süd, which was previously free of intersections, was expanded alternately to 2 + 1 lanes with a rigid central division with breakdown bays and partial noise protection between 2008 and 2009. However, between Göllersdorf and Großstelzendorf there is still an undeveloped section approx. 2 km long.

On August 1, 2009, the Stockerau-Hollabrunn-Süd junction of the previous A22 or B303 was converted to the S3 and integrated into the ASFINAG motorway and expressway network. With the conversion to an expressway, a vignette or toll was also introduced. On the one hand as a result of the security expansion - on the other hand, in order not to attract toll refugees from the Nord Autobahn, which went into operation in early 2010 .

Further expansion

The expansion of the Hollabrunn- Süd to Guntersdorf route is also planned in the 2 + 1 system . With a crown width of 16.40 meters, the section from Hollabrunn North to Guntersdorf will be slightly wider than the section from Hollabrunn South to Stockerau North. This means that emergency services can also drive past the cars in the single-lane areas. A later four-lane expansion is also taken into account here. In February 2012, the route to Guntersdorf was determined. In autumn of the same year it should still be submitted for the EIA. The expansion was originally planned between 2014 and 2016, but the first construction lot started on June 6, 2017 with two bridges over the Northwest Railway. The groundbreaking ceremony for the second construction lot, between Hollabrunn and Suttenbrunn, took place on September 2, 2017, with traffic opening planned for early 2020. In January 2018, the traffic release was given as October 2020. At the beginning of August 2018 it was announced that the road should be ready by the end of October 2020. The Hollabrunn bypass was taken over by ASFINAG on July 1, 2019 from the state of Lower Austria. Thus, the bypass is an important part of the S3 and is subject to toll and vignette even before the completion of the remaining section of the S3, which is under construction. Since the bypass has to be adapted to the requirements of an expressway, it is supplemented by wild fences, blue signs and emergency telephones. In addition, two rest areas with a total of 62 parking spaces for cars and 90 for trucks are being built near Wullersdorf. These have emergency telephones, LED lighting and defibrillators as well as video surveillance. In addition, the rest areas will be equipped with vending machines and an infrastructure line with toilet, shower and changing tables. Both systems will be built barrier-free. ASFINAG announced this on May 24, 2018. According to ASFINAG, the two rest areas near the Nexenhof should be completed around a year after the S3 has been opened to traffic.

The rest of the new construction of the remaining route from Guntersdorf to the Austrian-Czech state border near Kleinhaugsdorf will take place depending on the traffic development and in coordination with the plans on the Czech side. In this section, however, the existing B303 already leads outside the built-up areas.

history

During the monarchy , the connection from Stockerau was called Znaimer Straße or Stockerau-Znaimer Straße to distinguish it from Krems-Znaimer Straße . At that time the road still ran through the town centers of Sierndorf, Göllersdorf and Guntersdorf. By the federal law of July 8, 1921, the road between Vienna- Floridsdorf and the state border at Kleinhaugsdorf was designated as Prager Straße . Until 1938, Prager Straße was designated as B 2, after the connection with Austria , Prager Straße was part of Reichsstraße 96 until 1945 . Since 1948, this street has been referred to as Znaimer Strasse again to distinguish it from Prager Strasse in Upper Austria.

Today's Weinviertler Straße was known as Znaimer Straße until 1999 and was numbered B2. Until 1999 the B303 followed the course of today's Waldviertler Straße (B2). The renaming was done in order to document the planned expansion to the Weinviertel expressway (S3), as (former) federal roads in the planning and construction phase have a number that is 300 higher than their planned expressway number.

criticism

Specially designed traffic sign

There were also demands from local politicians to immediately expand the road to four lanes, but this was not considered economical due to the currently not very high volume of traffic (south of Hollabrunn less than 15,000 vehicles average daily traffic). However, a later four-lane expansion was taken into account in the planning.

There is also increasing criticism from the emergency organizations, since in the area of the extension of the former B303 the minimum widths according to the guidelines and regulations for the road system are not achieved everywhere. By placing concrete guide walls, the hard shoulder is severely narrowed. Sometimes there are no road separations and sometimes no hard shoulder. Since the emergency services can barely reach the scene in a traffic jam, the only lane must be kept free in narrow spaces when traffic comes to a standstill. A separate traffic sign was designed for this purpose.

Criticism was caused by the fact that vignettes or tolls are compulsory on the S3, even though it does not have a motorway cross-section. It was also complained that no vignettes are available between Kleinhaugsdorf and Stockerau at night, as petrol stations in this area are already closed from 10 p.m.
