  • The Klagenfurt expressway S 37 is an expressway between Klagenfurt and St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia . In the final stage, it is to be extended to Scheifling in Styria and, in conjunction with the Semmering expressway S 6 and the Murtal expressway S 36, represent an alternative connection to the south A 2 motorway from Vienna to Klagenfurt. Until completion, traffic between St. Veit and Scheifling will be taken from Friesacher Straße B 317.

    Planned course

    The S 37 is to begin at Scheifling as a direct extension of the Murtal expressway S 36 and, in Styria in the form of a new route, in Carinthia largely following the course of the Friesacher Straße B 317, via Friesach , Althofen and Sankt Veit an der Glan to Klagenfurt to lead.     The inclusion of the former state highway 317 as a freeway in the federal highway law was among other things due to the high truck - toll flight traffic necessary. Since the introduction of the truck toll , more and more trucks have been traveling on the S 6 – S 36 – B 317 route from Vienna to Klagenfurt, as there is no toll to be paid on the B 317, unlike the alternative route via the A 2. To curb truck traffic, a general truck driving ban between Dürnstein (state border Carinthia-Styria) and Scheifling was imposed from July 17, 2006. This does not apply to the destination and source traffic of the districts along the B 317 and some neighboring districts.

    Conversion to the expressway

    The 17.7 km long route between Klagenfurt and Sankt Veit was run as the S 37 Klagenfurt expressway from January 1, 2007, and as a federal road, it is subject to vignette and truck tolls. There is a driving ban for trucks on possible alternative routes in order to prevent alternative traffic.

    The S 37 has already been referred to in the media as the deadline in connection with serious accidents. In fact, serious accidents have already occurred on the Klagenfurt expressway. That is why some Carinthian politicians are urging the rapid expansion of the expressway.

    With the construction of the S 37, an additional continuous road connection from northern and eastern Austria via the Semmering, the Murtal and Friesach to Carinthia and on to Italy and Slovenia would be created. Since the connection from Vienna to Klagenfurt via the S 37 would be approx. 30 km shorter than the current connection via the Pack , Graz and Wechsel, and would also have fewer inclines, there is a shift in truck traffic from the Süd Autobahn to be expected on the S 37.

    For these reasons there is also resistance to the expansion plans, as this could create a new transit route.     In March 2012, ASFINAG announced that the expansion of the S 37 had been put on hold for economic reasons, but in October 2012 ASFINAG and the State of Carinthia presented plans for expanding the expressway over a length of 4.5 km. In the area of ​​intermediate waterways, the S 37 is to be expanded to four lanes (22.5 m wide) and with a central partition. After several years of planning, the decision was made to run parallel to the railway; not least for cost reasons, a tunnel variant was discarded. This section should be completed in 2017 [obsolete] .

    In November 2013 it was reported that the undeveloped existing route from Maria Saal to Sankt Veit Nord from currently 12.5 m wide to 17-17.5 m wide with structural separation of the directional lanes by concrete guide walls v. a. to be adapted to increase traffic safety. The construction work for this is to begin in 2015 and cost around 50 million euros. The upgraded line is approx. 18 km long and should be completed by 2020. According to the current status (beginning of July 2018), it is not foreseeable when the security expansion of the S37 can begin. Since 2016, the proceedings at the Administrative Court have been pending as to whether an environmental impact assessment is required for the security expansion, which is required according to the project opponent.     The expansion in the further course of the Friesacher Straße B 317 is no longer an issue, at least for the time being.
