The Donaugraben is a northern tributary of the Danube in Austria . It is 20 km long, its gradient at 1000 m is only 0.54 m. Its mean speed is about 0.33 m / s.

geography

The source of the Donaugraben is in the Karnabrunn Forest north of Obergänserndorf. It flows through the communities Harmannsdorf , Stetten , Korneuburg , Bisamberg and Langenzersdorf . It flows into the Danube in Langenzersdorf .

history

The many colossal soil fluctuations in the Pliocene brought about the creation of the Pontic Lake and the Danube River, which at that time carried much more powerful water than today and directed its main burden from Krems northeast to Eggenburg . An arm of this ancient Danube forced its way into the Korneuburg Basin. Another arm poured down from Karnabrunn and Großrußbach into this basin. This combined stream water flowed over the heights of the Bisamberg and flowed into the Vienna Basin . This mighty Danube then broke through between Bisamberg and Kahlenberg and thus got an even more comfortable route into the Vienna Basin and the Pontic Lake. It now became the main waterway, while the side mouths gradually disappeared. These arms are still preserved in the Rußbach , Waidenbach and the Zaya . That happened 7 to 1 million years ago. See also the geological history of Lower Austria . The Danube Trench is the small remnant of the arm of the Danube that flowed from Karnabrunn, the last witness of a large oxbow lake.

In 1832 the Donaugraben was declared the municipal property of all municipalities in the inundation area and administered by the political authorities and the maintenance costs were claimed from the municipalities.

Korneuburg region with the course of the old Danube trench, around 1873

In 1858 the course of the Danube trench was changed from the Tresdorf Basin to the Danube. The new course was no longer created to the west around the Teiritzberg, but was completely re-dug east of the Teiritzberg in a southerly direction with an arch towards Stetten.

The association of the communities Harmannsdorf, Leobendorf, Hagenbrunn, Bisamberg and Langenzersdorf, known today as the Donaugraben water association, has existed since 1873 . Because the Danube ditch flowing through Rückersdorf often overflowed its banks and caused considerable damage, a so-called relief channel was created in 1894 east of Rückersdorf, behind the Hinterzeile (Mühlgasse).

Further floods led to the fourth and largest regulation in the years 1900 to 1906. The entire Danube trench, approx. 12 km, was dammed. Together with the regulation of the "current channel", the mouth sections of all side streams were corrected, including the Klein-Engersdorfer trench and the Bisamberger local trench. In 1908, on the occasion of the sixtieth year of regulation by the emperor, a memorial stone was erected near the Danube trench bridge in Bisamberg for the completion of the Danube trench regulation.

In the Stetten area, the Vienna outer ring expressway passes under the Danube trench.

In order to protect the building land in Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf, some of which is in flood areas, from flooding, a rainwater retention basin is being planned as part of the planning for the Rückersdorf-Harmannsdorf bypass .

Naming

Because the Danube trench flows in the former river bed of the Danube, it also bears this name. From the source to the Teiritz threshold it was also named Loipbach or Loipbach-Waldbach . Only the no longer existing, old loop in the Tresdorfer level around the western edge of the Teiritzberg up to the Danube has always been named Donaugraben.
