About this picture

The Obdacher road B 78 is a main road in Austria km with a length of 40.7. It is named after the place Obdach in Styria . Obdacher Straße is an important link between Carinthia and Styria. It connects the Wolfsberg district with the Murtal district .

history

The Obdacher street belonged since 1 January 1949 to the network of federal roads in Austria .

Since January 1, 1973, the northern section between Weißkirchen and Zeltweg has also been part of the network of federal roads in Austria .

course

Zeltweg bypass

Obdacher Straße begins at the intersection with Packer Straße B 70 in Twimberg , a cadastral community of the city of Bad St. Leonhard . The next important junction of the B 78 is the Bad St. Leonhard motorway junction to the A 2 southern motorway . Further north, the road runs through the urban area of Bad St. Leonhard. The Reichenfels bypass and the Obdacher saddle follow . Then the Obdach bypass tunnel and the Eppenstein through-road are reached. Shortly after Eppenstein comes the roundabout with Gaberl Straße B 77 and L 537. Obdacher Straße ends at the driveway to Murtal expressway S 36.

Bypasses

While the Reichenfels bypass has existed for a long time, the Obdach and Zeltweg bypasses have only existed for a few years, and the Bad St. Leonhard bypass was recently completed. There are no plans to build a bypass road for the Eppenstein community.

Zeltweg bypass

The Zeltweg bypass was opened on November 3rd, 2004 after 2½ years of construction and cost 11 million euros. Before the opening of the Zeltweg bypass, the B 78 ran through the local areas of Zeltweg and Fisching, a cadastral community of Maria Buch-Feistritz . Since there was very heavy traffic (especially trucks ) on the route , the call for a detour became louder and louder. Only after the road was closed by residents, the decision was made to start the bypass at the existing roundabout with Gaberl Strasse B 77. This intersection was expanded into a roundabout with five branches. The route of the bypass leads west past Zeltweg through uninhabited but difficult to build up area. The Mur is crossed three times, and the Rudolfsbahn also had to be crossed on a bridge. The former B 78 was downgraded to the L 537 state road.

Bypass shelter

The Obdach bypass was opened on April 24, 2002 after four years of construction and cost 18.5 million euros. The through-road from Obdach was one of the bottlenecks on Obdacher Straße, as there was only one lane to drive in the area of the former city gate. The core of the 2120 m long bypass is a 784 m long underground route .

Bad St. Leonhard bypass

Bad St. Leonhard has also been thinking of bypassing the city for some time. As in Obdach in the past, the street in Bad St. Leonhard leads across the main square and there is also a narrow section near the former city wall. Because of the large number of trucks , the bypass is required by many citizens.

The four years of lengthy planning process came on 22 June 2006 to a conclusion when the route in the council was unanimously of the town of Bad St. Leonhard. A citizens' initiative led by Josef Kantor waived the demand for an enclosure in the Lower City area in advance , because regional traffic officer Gerhard Dörfler ( BZÖ ) promised to increase the planned noise protection wall in this area from four to five and a half meters and to add highly noise-absorbing elements Mistake. This measure was also decided in the municipal council.

The decided western bypass of Bad St. Leonhard will run near the Lavant and includes two underground routes with 340 and 475 m respectively. Four houses have to be replaced on the longer underground route in the area of the Badsiedlung. The total costs should amount to 36 million euros. The groundbreaking ceremony took place shortly before the Carinthian municipal and state elections on February 28, 2009 in the presence of Governor Gerhard Dörfler .

After criticism from the Court of Auditors , the project was rescheduled and only an underground line was built, and more plots were replaced, so that 18 families moved. Ultimately, the total costs came to around EUR 46 million. On July 15, 2012, Governor Gerhard Dörfler officially opened the bypass.

Expansion and renovation

The B 78 has been gradually expanded for years. By 2006, a continuous cycle path should be built along the road from Reichenfels to Mauterndorf. In 2004, parts of the street between Obdach and Eppenstein were renovated. The route over the Obdacher Sattel was renovated in 2005 and the roadway widened. Chain berths for trucks were built on each side in front of the Obdacher saddle.

B78  Like the other former federal highways, Obdacher Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
