history

Origins

Burgenland belonged to Hungary until 1921 . All roads in northern Burgenland were oriented towards the county capital Ödenburg ( Sopron ). The route from Ödenburg via Pöttsching to the Lower Austrian city of Wiener Neustadt was therefore run as a Hungarian state road in 1854. In 1926 the road network in Burgenland was reorganized and adapted to the changed state borders. The Wiener Neustadt-Ödenburger Straße from Neudörfl via Pöttsching and Zemendorf to the Hungarian border near Schattendorf was declared a state road by the Burgenland state law of February 9, 1927.

Former main streets and names

The Wiener Neustädter Straße from Wiener Neustadt via Pöttsching to the Hungarian state border near Schattendorf was declared a federal highway by ordinance of the federal government of June 9, 1933. Until 1938 this federal road was called the B 16. After the annexation of Austria , this road was converted into a first order road on April 1, 1940 as part of the standardization of the road system and designated as LIO 67. Since January 1, 1949, Wiener Neustädter Strasse has again been part of the network of federal highways in Austria . Since September 1, 1971, the eastern section between Zemendorf and the Hungarian state border is no longer a federal highway.

Replacements

According to the Federal Roads Act of 1971, the Eisenstadt expressway S 4 was supposed to replace Wiener Neustädter Straße. The vacant number B 53 was assigned to Mattersburger Strasse , which runs from Wiener Neustadt via Sauerbrunn to Mattersburg and has only been part of the network of federal roads in Austria since January 1, 1972 . However, as the traffic on this street decreased more and more due to the opening of the Mattersburger Schnellstraße S 4 , this route was closed in 1986 and the designation B 53 was adopted for the Pöttschinger Straße, which was previously known as B 304 .

The Pöttschinger road was like the other former federal roads in the federal administration. It has been under state administration since April 1, 2002 and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name of the federal road.
