history

The Ödenburgerstrasse connects the Austrian capital Vienna with the to 1921 belonging to Hungary Burgenland and the Hungarian county seat Sopron .

Origins

Today's Ödenburger Straße comprises three sections with different origins:

It was not until 1923 that these three sections were combined into a single federal road.

Prince Esterházysche Mauthstrasse

The street called Ödenburger Straße in Lower Austria and Wiener Straße in Hungary led through the Hornstein County, which belonged to the Esterházy family. The Esterházy family operated two toll stations in Müllendorf and Wimpassing, each of which was leased for three years.

Ödenburger Reichsstrasse

In 1834 there were toll stations in Wampersdorf, Ebreichsdorf, Münchendorf, Achau and Biedermannsdorf, which brought in around 15,500 guilders for the state treasury.

Previous routes and names

The Ödenburgerstrasse the favorites in Vienna to the border at Wimpassing one of the former imperial roads that were taken in 1921 as federal highways. In 1923 this federal road was extended to the new Hungarian state border near Ödenburg after the state affiliation of the Burgenland had finally been clarified. Until 1938 the Ödenburger Straße was designated as B 9, after the connection of Austria the Ödenburger Straße was led as part of the Reichsstraße 96 until 1945 .

The B 16 originally began on the Vienna city limits, but since September 1, 1971, the B 16 has started in Vienna-Favoriten on the southeast bypass (A23).

course

The B16 begins in Vienna at the Favoriten distribution circle and leads over Favoritenstrasse and Himberger Strasse to the Rothneusiedl junction on Vienna's outer ring expressway (S1). The further course through the local area of Leopoldsdorf near Vienna was abandoned in 2006 with the opening of the S1 as state road B16 and graded to the municipal road. Subsequently was for all 2008 vehicles a through traffic ban imposed, so you now have the vignette paid S1 and the bypass Leopoldsdorf must avoid. The B16 starts again at the S1 junction at Leopoldsdorf. From Münchendorf the B16 runs parallel to the Südost Autobahn (A3) to Wulkaprodersdorf . There the A3 ends and joins the B16, which now has to carry the main traffic load in the direction of Hungary. The B16 continues to the border crossing Klingenbach / Sopron and joins the Hungarian road 84, which leads to Ödenburg .

The A3 is to be extended to the state border and replace the B16 as the main mode of transport.
