Rothneusiedl was an independent municipality until 1938 and is now a district of Vienna in the 10th Viennese district of Favoriten as well as one of the 89 Viennese cadastral communities .

geography

Rothneusiedl is located south of the Liesing and Laaer mountains . Upstream is the Vienna district of Inzersdorf , which already belongs to the 23rd district of Liesing , and downstream is the Viennese district of Oberlaa . In the south, Rothneusiedl borders the Lower Austrian municipality of Hennersdorf .

The cadastral community extends over an area of 189.91 hectares . Rothneusiedl also designates a census district of official statistics consisting of five census districts, the borderline of which, however, is not identical to that of the cadastral municipality.

history

Former manor in Rothneusiedl

The place in the south of Vienna probably originated in the 9th century when numerous new settlers came to the Favoritner forest area after the migration. The first written mention of the place took place in 1301 as Newsidel . The syllable "Roth" in the place name may come from the red soil in places. Rothneusiedl was mainly influenced by agriculture , which still plays an important role in the town today.

The industrialization had little effect on the development of the town. However, around the middle of the 19th century, Tegel began to be dismantled in the area around Rothneusiedl . With the law of October 1, 1938 after the annexation of Austria to the German Reich , Vienna was enlarged to become Greater Vienna . This resulted in the incorporation of Rothneusiedl. After the end of the Second World War , this was confirmed in 1954.

population

The cadastral community of Rothneusiedl has around 700 inhabitants (2001).

In 1783 the place had 120 inhabitants, in 1869 246 inhabitants, in 1910 553 inhabitants and in 1961 579 inhabitants.

coat of arms

The motif for the design of the part of the Favoritner coat of arms intended for Rothneusiedl was a red ring oven with an underlying, curved, silver stream on a blue background. These symbolize the earlier Tegel mining and the Liesing.

Infrastructure

Rothneusiedl is still rural today, large areas are still used for agriculture and gardens. Nevertheless, there have been plans for an extension of the Vienna underground line U1 from Reumannplatz to the south since the 1970s . When the five-kilometer stretch to Rothneusiedl was examined, it turned out that the area has many, but very scattered, settlements. That is why it was hardly possible to use the subway.

As part of the underground extension plans at the beginning of the 21st century, the idea was taken up again and finally decided by the local council. The plan was to put the new Reumannplatz – Rothneusiedl line into operation by 2015. According to the planners, the cost of the route would have been around 860 million euros. In 2012, however, it was decided to extend the U1 to Oberlaa instead . In the area of the Alaudagasse station , preparations are to be made for a future fork in the line, should the further development of Rothneusiedl justify the routing of a subway branch there.

The new U1 terminus at Therme Wien has been in place since September 2, 2017 .
