Favorites is a district of Vienna in the same 10th district of Vienna favorites and one of the 89 Wiener Katastralgemeinden .

Favoriten is located in the north of the municipality and borders in the south on the districts of Inzersdorf-Stadt and Oberlaa . The cadastral municipality extends over an area of ​​526.14 hectares , of which 2 hectares are in the Landstrasse municipal district.

history

The imperial baroque castle Favorita , which houses the Theresian Academy and is located in the municipality of Wieden , was the namesake of Favoriten. When Linienwall near the castle a small settlement arose. A large part of Favoriten consisted of fields, vineyards and pastureland until the 19th century.

Parts of Favoriten were incorporated into Vienna in 1850. In 1874 the 10th district of Favoriten was created, which initially only consisted of the later district of Favoriten.

Christ Church at the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery

The Gothic stone column Spinnerin am Kreuz stands on the border with Inzersdorf-Stadt and is a landmark of Favoriten, which was mentioned as early as 1296. Well-known church buildings in Favoriten are the Antonskirche , the Johanneskirche and the Katharina-von-Siena-Kirche . These, like the Trinity Church , the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Three Miracles and the Parish Church of the Holy Family, are listed as historical monuments. The Ernst-Kirchweger-Haus , a center of the autonomous scene, is also located in Favoriten . On Matzleinsdorf Protestant Cemetery many famous people are buried. Nearby is the Waldmüllerpark , which was created in 1922 on the site of the Matzleinsdorf Catholic cemetery. In Favoriten there are several listed municipal buildings of the Red Vienna , including the George-Washington-Hof , the Hueber-Hof , the Pölzerhof and the Victor-Adler-Hof .

The coat of arms of Favoriten dates from 1905 and shows the apostle Johannes , to whom the Johanneskirche on Keplerplatz is consecrated.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Spital is located in Favoriten ; The Gottfried von Preyer Children's Hospital existed until June 2016, and its facilities were then moved to the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Spital. The Favoriten fire station and the Amalienbad are also located in the Favoriten district .

In the north of the district is the new Vienna Central Station . The district of Favoriten is connected to the subway line U1 with the stations Südtiroler Platz / Hauptbahnhof, Keplerplatz , Reumannplatz , Troststraße and Altes Landgut .

From 2010 onwards, two new city quarters were built on the area of ​​the former 3rd Südbahnhof or its freight station: the Belvedere quarter directly around the main station , followed by the Sonnwendviertel . The large Helmut-Zilk-Park was laid out in this until 2016/2017 .
