The George Washington Hof is a spacious, protected public housing in the Triesterstraße 52 in the 10th district of Vienna , favorites , and the Wienerbergstraße in the 10th and the 12th district, Meidling .

history

The residential complex was built between 1927 and 1930 by the municipality of Vienna under Mayor Karl Seitz using the funds from the housing tax. The original name was a residential complex at the spinner on the cross . The architects Karl Krist and Robert Oerley followed the concept of a garden city with the relaxed structure . The large inner courtyard and the double archway with a relief medallion by George Washington by Heinrich K. Scholz from 1932 and a dedication plaque from the same year are remarkable . In that year the settlement was given its current name.

The complex consists of five spacious courtyards, named Birkenhof, Fliederhof and Ahornhof after the original planting (all three designed by Arch. Krist, in the 10th district; district border on Köglergasse), as well as Ulmenhof and Akazienhof (both designed by Arch. Oerley, in the 12th district) bear, as well as from some buildings along Triester Straße and Unter-Meidlinger Straße (10th district). The complex corresponds to other early social large-scale residential buildings, such as the Karl-Marx-Hof , which opened up new living qualities to a large section of the population through communal social facilities such as laundry rooms, kindergartens and a library.

There are several works of art on the grounds of the facility: a terracotta figure of a woman with two children by Josef Franz Riedl is attached to the former mother advice center on Triester Straße , a bronze figure of a girl by Hugo Taglang is located in the Ulmenhof and there is a in the through-house tract above Eschenallee George Washington portrait medallion attached.

During the extensive renovations that began in 1989 under the architects Wilhelm Kleyhons, Jakob Khayat, Engelbert Eder and Jörg Riesenhuber, apartments were merged and special care was taken in the reconstruction of the fine decor and facades.

useful information

Countless skeletons of hanged men were found during the construction of the George Washington Court, apparently buried on the spot. These come from the Spinnerin am Kreuz , a former Viennese execution site , located directly on the east side of the building .

A plaque at the Ahornhof reminds us that the command post of the Republican Schutzbund was located here on February 12, 1934 .

For some time now, spring and sports festivals have been taking place regularly in the George Washington Hof.
