The Bernstein Straße (B 49) is a state road B in Austria . It has a length of 74.1 km and runs along the state border with Slovakia first on the March , later on the Thaya . The road begins on the Danube , crosses it and initially runs through the Marchfeld . It passes the WWF - nature reserve Marchauen and meets in Angern an der March on the north runway from which it is accompanied for the rest of the way. The road continues through the Weinviertel before it ends at Lundenburger Strasse (B 47) just before the state border to the Czech Republic in the far northeast of Austria.

The Bernstein Strasse takes its name from the Bernsteinstrasse , the oldest trade route in Central Europe, which has taken a similar route through the Weinviertel.

history

The northern section of the Bernstein Strasse between Angern and the Czech border has been part of the network of federal roads in Austria since January 1st, 1951 .

The southern section between Angern and Engelhartstetten was originally called Marchegger Straße and has also been part of the network of federal highways in Austria since April 1, 1959 . By the federal law of March 7, 1968, this federal road was extended to Preßburger Strasse on the southern bank of the Danube, but the corresponding road bridge over the Danube was not completed until 1972. Since 2002, the road is a national road B .

B49	Like the other former federal highways, Bernstein Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
