economy

The founding of the Hohenau sugar factory in 1867 was economically important for the town . In 2006 the Agrana Group's sugar factory was closed after the sugar factories in Bruck an der Leitha, Enns, Siegendorf and Dürnkrut. There was now one in Tulln and one in Leopoldsdorf in Marchfeld. The majority of the workforce was dismissed. The sugar silo systems of the former factory are still used. For the region and for Hohenau, the closure of the sugar factory meant the loss of the largest employer. Abid GmbH, which produces biofuels (RME rapeseed methyl ester), now operates a branch on part of the former site of the Hohenau sugar factory.

There used to be a cooling water pond for sugar production , which is not frozen over even when the outside temperature is low. For this reason, thousands of wild ducks and wild geese used this pond as a stopover in winter on their flight to the south. After the sugar factory was closed in 2006, a pond was built for fish farming instead of the cooling pond.

In 2001 there were 105 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations 22 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 1101.

In June 2018 the ground-breaking ceremony took place for a retail park in the center of the Hohenau market town. It was opened on April 11, 2019 under the name "Bernsteinpark" and comprises a Eurospar branch, a DM branch, a Hofer branch and a hairdresser.

traffic

March bridge near Hohenau

Hohenau ad March is accessed on the street side from Bernstein Straße (B 49) and Erdöl Straße (B 48). Hohenau station is on the Austrian Northern Railway and is the end point of the Korneuburg – Hohenau local railway .

On July 7, 2005 the Marchbrücke was opened, the only road crossing from Austria to Slovakia north of the Danube. It connects Hohenau with Moravský Svätý Ján . Before that, there was only one pontoon bridge since the early 1990s , which was reserved for vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tonnes. The single-lane Marchbrücke was built in a construction period of two years and is 132 meters long. To allow larger ships to pass, the central section can be raised 1.6 meters. As the approach on the Austrian side is flooded during high water, the bridge cannot be used all year round, contrary to political announcements. For nature conservation reasons, the road connection is generally closed at night from midnight to 5 a.m.

In 2018, for structural reasons, the existing roundabout in the center of the town was completely demolished and massively enlarged for the construction of the "Bernstein Park".
