history

The area of Rabensburg was already settled in the Neolithic , the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Age. In the hallway Tiergarten fief three Hallstatt are burial mounds preserved.

Rabensburg was first mentioned in a document in 1255. King John of Bohemia conquered the place in 1328. After the Kuenringern and Zelkingern , the Liechtensteiners received rule in 1385 . Rabensburg was raised to market in 1414, and market rights were renewed in 1835. Especially at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, numerous border fights took place near Rabensburg.

In the last days of World War II , Rabensburg was the scene of fighting and the associated destruction. There is a detailed report on this in the archive of the Army History Museum . Accordingly, the place was occupied by German soldiers on April 1, 1945. On April 9th, Russian soldiers were sighted for the first time and heavy artillery fire began. After the fall of Hohenau on April 15, the battle for Rabensburg began, with concentrated artillery fire continuing throughout the day. On the night of April 16, the Russians came to the southern end of the town, but were pushed back again. The following night the place was again bombarded with artillery for 6 hours, which claimed several lives and set several houses on fire. The shelling continued unabated on April 18, until the Germans withdrew due to the hopelessness of a defense and the Russians marched into the place without a fight. As a result of the long artillery bombardment, 56 houses and the elementary school were "totally burned down".

Population development

The population has stabilized since 1991, as the negative birth balance is offset by a positive migration balance.
