Großebersdorf is located about 15 km north of Vienna at the transition from the Marchfeld to the hilly region of the Weinviertel . The area of ​​the municipality covers 18 km². 7.72% of the area is forested.

history

In the final phase of the Second World War , Großebersdorf and the surrounding area became the scene of fighting between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army . The population was not evacuated and sought refuge in the wine cellars. On April 12, the site was captured by Russian troops, killing around 40 to 50 Red Army soldiers, four German soldiers and three civilians. 14 buildings had burned down, several others were damaged by artillery fire, and the church was also hit. Manhartsbrunn was shelled by artillery between April 15 and 18, killing two civilians and burning three objects.

On November 10, 2011, the community Großebersdorf was raised to a market community.

Population development

As of January 1, 2014, the market town of Großebersdorf has 2,258 (with a secondary residence 2,785) inhabitants. According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 2,159 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1,984 inhabitants, 1,514 in 1981 and 1,491 in 1971.
