Gaubitsch is a municipality with 880 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria .

geography

The municipality of Gaubitsch is located in the northern Weinviertel in Lower Austria, eight kilometers south of Laa an der Thaya on the edge of the hilly country that borders the Laa Plain in the south. The area of ​​the municipality covers 22.47 square kilometers. 3.47 percent of the area is forested.

The municipality includes the following three localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

The community consists of the cadastral communities Altenmarkt , Gaubitsch and Kleinbaumgarten.

The community belongs to the small region of Land um Laa .

With the Lower Austria. Municipal structure improvement was merged on January 1st, 1972 Gaubitsch and Unterstinkenbrunn to the municipality of Gartenbrunn . The merger was reversed on January 1st, 1995.

history

The area has a Neolithic and Latène period settlement, the place Gaubitsch was first mentioned in 1055. The church, which is located on a hill in the middle of the village, is the oldest in the area. Its bell tower was destroyed several times during wartime. The age of the community of Gaubitsch goes back to the 11th century - in 1055 Emperor Heinrich III appeared in a deed of donation. the place as "villa Gevvatisprunnen" or "Gouuazesbrunnen", 1147 as "Gawats" after the Slavic personal name for "blacksmith".

In the last days of the Second World War , between April 18 and May 8, 1945, Gaubitsch was the scene of violent and varied battles between troops of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army , in which around 40% of the village was destroyed. Several civilians were killed. Infantry fights with grenade launchers took place in Kleinbaumgarten , killing five civilians.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 937 inhabitants. In 1991 the community had 884 inhabitants, in 1981 873 and in 1971 911 inhabitants.

  • Catholic parish church Gaubitsch hl. Stephanus: The parish church with a Romanesque (13th century) building with a Gothic (14th century) choir is an important mother parish in the region.
  • Four-headed pillar in the town center; the gothic tabernacle pillar made of Zogelsdorf sandstone was built in 1504 and donated by the village judge Wolfgang Trautmann.   • There are three remarkable late Gothic light columns from the second half of the 15th century in the community.
