Altenmarkt is a small cadastral municipality in the municipality of Gaubitsch and is located about 5 km south of the city of Laa an der Thaya in the northeastern Weinviertel in the political district of Mistelbach .

history

The KG Altenmarkt, a street village with a municipal area of 4.81 km², is bounded north of Laa, east of Ungerndorf , southeast of Fallbach, south of Gaubitsch and southwest of Kleinbaumgarten. The name Altenmarkt, near the Laa border fortress, makes it seem not unlikely that the place was formerly a larger, more important, perhaps market, which was destroyed in the turmoil of war that often heaved around Laa and then could no longer achieve its former importance.

According to Heinrich Weigl, Altenmarkt was founded before 1000. The ruler of the village was the sovereign, who might have received it from the bishops of Passau. Altenmarkt appears for the first time between 1260 and 1280 in the princely land registers (property registers).

Altenmarkt belonged to the Fallbach parish until 1783, when it was parish off to Gaubitsch. In 1797 a chapel was built on a small hill, which was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt by the local population in 1951.

In the last days of World War II , Altenmarkt was heavily shelled with artillery by the Red Army between April 20 and May 8, 1945 . One civil person was killed and 36 buildings were largely destroyed by fire. On May 8, Red Army soldiers marched into the village.

Altenmarkt volunteer fire department

The Altenmarkt volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1900. It was not until 1960 that there were records of the development up to the present status of the Altenmarkt volunteer fire department. From 1960, minutes of the annual general meetings were noted for the first time. From this, the development and operations of the volunteer fire brigade can be reconstructed to some extent.
