Ottenthal is a municipality with 533 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria .
geography
Ottenthal is located on the northern edge of the Weinviertel in Lower Austria. The area of the municipality covers 15.4 square kilometers, about 5% of the area is forested.

The community consists of the cadastral communities Guttenbrunn and Ottenthal.

In the north, Ottenthal borders the municipality (?) In the Czech Republic . Austrian neighboring communities are (clockwise from the east) Drasenhofen , Falkenstein , Neudorf im Weinviertel and Wildendürnbach .
history
In the final phase of the Second World War , there was no significant fighting in Ottenthal, but attacks on the civilian population by soldiers of the Red Army . On April 22, 1945, the Russians marched into the village after an incendiary bombing the night before, in which two residential buildings burned down and five civilians were killed. After the soldiers billeted themselves, several local residents who wanted to protect their daughters from rape were murdered. The place remained occupied by the Red Army until the end of May 1945, after which the population suffered from raids by Czech partisans .

Blazon : "In green between four, two offset, white flowers with four oblique petals and a golden lug a fallen, curled white-lined red tip, inside a fallen golden sword." The colors of the flags are red, golden and green, occupied with the local coat of arms.
The golden sword and the red tip symbolize the sword and cloak of St. Martin , patron saint of the local church, the flowers those of the wild Tátorján sea cabbage .
The coat of arms was officially awarded to the Lower Austrian provincial government on June 28, 2009 based on a municipal resolution of June 13, 2008 with a proposed coat of arms and presented to Mayor Albert Graf in a ceremony by Governor Erwin Pröll .
Population development
Since the peak of the population at the beginning of the 20th century, the municipality has lost more than half of the population. In the last few decades, both the birth balance and the migration balance were negative.

- Nature reserve Zeiserlberg : To the west of the village lies the only occurrence of Tátorján sea kale in Austria . The species is a relic of the last Ice Age and its main range is in the vast steppes north of the Black Sea . The next location is in South Moravia .
economy
In 2001 there were 15 non-agricultural workplaces, and according to the 1999 survey there were 67 in agriculture and forestry. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at home was 264. In 2001, the employment rate was 44%.
