Leopoldsdorf im Marchfelde is in the center of the Marchfeld am Rußbach ( Marchfeld Canal ) in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria . The area of ​​the market municipality covers 28.95 square kilometers, with the cadastral municipality Leopoldsdorf in Marchfelde 17.24 and the cadastral municipality Breitstetten 11.71 square kilometers. 6.27 percent of the area is forested.

The oldest mention of the place comes from the famous minstrel Tannhäuser in 1246, who had a property (fiefdom) in Leopoldsdorf.

Former names of Leopoldsdorf were Liutpoltsdorf daz lit bi Luchse nahen (owner Tannhäuser ), Leupoltzdorf, Lewpoltsdorf, Leoppoltsdorf, Luiberstorff, Leutmannsdorf, Loibersdorf, Loypersdorf ( Vischkarte ), Loipersdorf, Loibersdorff and Leopoldsdorf VUMB (district under the Manhartsberg ). The current spelling Leopoldsdorf im Marchfelde goes back to a publication in the State Law Gazette in 1916.

In the course of the Lower Austria. Municipal structural improvement were in 1971 (or 1968), the two communities Leopoldsdorf and Breitstetten for greater community merged Leopold im Marchfelde.

In the 57th session of the XII. In the legislative period of the Lower Austrian Parliament, Leopoldsdorf in Marchfelde was raised to a market municipality on July 9, 1987 by unanimous decision.

A shield quartered in red and silver, topped with a golden ear of wheat growing from the base of the shield. The colors to be derived from the municipal coat of arms are therefore “red and white”.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 2392 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2244 inhabitants, in 1981 2092 and in 1971 2153 inhabitants.

economy

In 2001 there were 94 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations 40 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment in the place of residence was 1072. In 2001, the activity rate was 46.44 percent.

In the village, Agrana has been running a sugar factory that has been in existence since 1901 with 150 employees (and 100 more during the campaign, the beet delivery time as of August 2020). As in the past, the operator is currently considering closing the factory due to insufficient capacity utilization. The cultivation area for sugar beet in Lower Austria has fallen from around 40,000 hectares (in 2017) to 26,000 hectares with a high area yield (2020). Agrana also operates the Tulln sugar factory in Lower Austria and only wants to continue operating the Leopoldsdorf plant in 2021 if the cultivation area increases to at least 38,000 hectares.
