The parish church Leopoldsdorf im Marchfelde stands in the middle of the Angers in the market town of Leopoldsdorf im Marchfelde in the Gänserndorf district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to the evangelist Markus belongs to the deanery Marchfeld in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg in the archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

The previous building of the church was demolished in 1772, while the previous church tower remained up to the bell floor and was integrated into the new church. The new building was built between 1771 and 1774.

architecture

The large late baroque church building, visible from afar, is surrounded by the former churchyard wall.

The mighty cubic nave shows a plaster frame structure and arched windows. The north-facing church shows a raised, three-storey south front with a blind pedicle and a stepped volute gable with an oval window above the continuous cornice. The sturdy three-storey tower erected to the northeast of the retracted choir was probably a former defensive tower, shows a plaster band structure with double bars and segmented arched windows in the bell storey and wears a late baroque onion helmet. The east portal has a late baroque iron door. There is a sacristy annex to the west of the choir.

The church has gravestones from the 19th century and from 1787 on the east wall. There is a baroque stone grave cross with 1743 on the sacristy annex.

The interior of the church shows a three-bay nave with square vaults on belts on strong, sloping wall pillars with strong, richly cranked cornices. The organ loft, which is vaulted with a square, has a wide arcade. The retracted choir is square-vaulted and open to a groin-vaulted chapel room in the basement of the tower in the east; to the west of the choir is the square-vaulted sacristy.

Furnishing

The late baroque furnishings are from the construction period and use Salzburg marble , some with plait decor.

The high altar has a closed frame in the form of a segment and shows the eye of God in a wreath of clouds, it bears the figures Peter and Paul . The high altar picture St. Markus probably painted Johann Nepomuk Schöpf.

The side altar paintings on the left Immaculate Conception and on the right St. Margarete painted Martin Unterberger in 1774. The excerpts show St. Leopold and on the right St. Florian. These pictures were restored from 1983 to 1985.

The dream of St. Josef von Martin Unterweger from the third quarter of the 18th century was transferred here from the chapel of the castle that was destroyed in 1945.

The organ gallery has a richly decorated wooden parapet. The organ was created by Matthäus Mauracher in 1898 and rebuilt in 1962. A bell calls 1772 .
