Contaminated sites

The Bachfeld landfill is located about 1 km east of the center of Schönkirchen on the road from Gänserndorf to Matzen. It is a deepening in the ground filled with excavated soil, construction debris and construction site waste, which was created in the course of an oil drilling in 1949, whereby a pinge formed in which even the derrick sank. In August 1951, the pinge had a size of around 12,000 m². In 1969, excess oil was burned. Subsequently, it was filled up until 1980, whereby the deposits mixed with the crude oil. The area is around 63,000 m², whereby the volume of the deposit can only be estimated at around 160,000 m³ and a total of around 215,000 m³ of deposits and subsoil are likely to be heavily contaminated with mineral oil hydrocarbons.
