history

Strasshof was first mentioned in a document around 1300. In the land register (Urbar) of Melk Abbey, the farming village of Strazze appears with a church around 1330 . After the wars of the Hungarians, the place became deserted. In old maps, around 1670, the street appears again near the 3 proud pines .

In today's Bartoschviertel north of the train station there were three forest workers' houses around 1800.

In 1838, during the extension of the northern runway in the area of the cadastral community of Straßerfeld, railroad keeper's houses were built. But only with the commissioning of the shunting yard (1908) did a lot of construction work. A development plan by the Czech investor Ludwig (Ludvik) Odstrčil provided for the site to be structured along the lines of English garden cities (suburbs). It should accommodate the workers of an industrial area planned on the northern railway. The end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy ruined this plan. However, since the parceling had already taken place, there was an unorganized settlement of the area with the result that a closed settlement area slowly emerged only after the Second World War. To this day, this is reflected in the lack of a town center. The history of Strasshof was shaped primarily by what was once Austria's largest shunting yard (125 tracks), which existed from 1908 to 1959. Before the First World War, freight trains from the North Moravian coal fields were divided here. The old boiler house with some tracks, in which the railway museum is housed, is still preserved. In 1923, Strasshof became an independent municipality after previously belonging to the municipality of Gänserndorf.

During the National Socialist era, there was a transit camp in Strasshof . Initially used for the internment of Eastern workers , forced laborers from all over Europe were subsequently held there . In 1944 , the Eichmann Command deported 21,000 Hungarian Jews to Strasshof. Most of these people survived because of an agreement between the Committee for Help and Rescue and Adolf Eichmann . In 1945 the place was badly affected by an air raid by US bombers on the shunting yard. On April 10th, soldiers of the Red Army reached Strasshof.

Flugfeldstrasse in Strasshof is reminiscent of a former airfield that was there during the First World War. During the Second World War, a new military airfield was built on the border with Deutsch-Wagram , the runways of which are still visible today. The Red Army used it until 1955 .

After the Second World War, Strasshof developed rapidly and was elevated to a market town in 1956. In 1947 the name was changed from Straßhof (Marchfeld) to Straßhof an der Nordbahn.

The place has recently gained prominence through the kidnapping of Natascha Kampusch . She had been imprisoned there in the basement of a family house for almost eight and a half years until she managed to escape on August 23, 2006. The kidnapper Wolfgang Priklopil committed suicide on the evening of the same day suicide .

  • Strasshof local history museum
  • Cultural Marchfeld Strasshof (Kumst): In Strasshof opened on 19 September 2015. The celebrations were among others with the performance of an unknown operetta committed from the "golden era": One of Carl Millöcker and Ludwig Anzengruber originally for the Vienna Harmonie Theater in Alsergrund designed plant - Der Sackpfeifer - had its world premiere (and three other performances) because it did not get on stage while the authors were alive.
  • In the center of the village (Waldviertel) on the B8 there is a DR class 52 steam locomotive with the serial number 52.7593, manufactured by the Floridsdorf locomotive factory in 1944.
  • The proud pine, which is also on the local coat of arms, is a black pine that was planted around 230 years ago. These plantings were arranged by Empress Maria Theresa to protect the Marchfeld from being deserted by drifting sand. The proud pine has been a nature reserve since March 6, 1968.
  • The holm oak was planted during the reforestation around 1900. Once upon a time, a whole young forest was supposed to cover the area to the left and right of the main road. Due to the sandy soil, however, this could not develop and only became a cripple forest.
  • The Fliegermarterl from 1971 commemorates the successful emergency landing of Lieutenant Colonel Blaschke's plane in 1912. At that time, the latter took part in a flying competition and had to make an emergency landing on the northern runway shortly before its destination in Strasshof.

economy

In 2001 there were a total of 197 workplaces, agricultural and forestry businesses according to the 1999 survey 8. The employment rate in 2001 was 45.76 percent.

While it used to be a small event in the House of Encounters, this event has developed into a mega-event over the past 15 years. Around 120 exhibitors from Marchfeld have the opportunity to present their products and services on the specially adapted exhibition center. The 3 days of the fair are accompanied by a varied supporting program, such as cabaret, dance, etc.

At the beginning of 2005, OMV discovered large natural gas deposits with a volume of four billion cubic meters in the vicinity . If OMV originally assumed a production rate of up to one million cubic meters per day, the project had to be written off in 2012, as the gas proved to be ineligible for technical reasons.
