Moravský Svätý Ján ( German St. Johann an der March , Hungarian Morvaszentjános ) is a municipality in the far west of Slovakia .
geography
The place is 5 km east of the Lower Austrian border, which is formed here by the March (Morava) . The Czech border, also formed by the March, is 12 km north of the town. The Slovak capital Bratislava (Pressburg) is about 50 km south.
history
The municipality was mentioned for the first time in 1449. Habaners settled in the village in the 16th century .
Until 1918 the place was in the Hungarian county of Pressburg and was officially called Morvaszentjános or until 1907 only Szentjános , in German Sankt Johann an der March . From 1960 to 1992 the place in the anti-clerical Czechoslovakia was only referred to as "Moravský Ján".
traffic
The community is located on the Břeclav – Kúty railway line and is connected to the D2 motorway (European route E65) through the Kúty motorway exit 6 km away .
On July 7, 2005, the Marchbrücke to Hohenau was inaugurated, the only road crossing from Slovakia to Austria north of the Danube. Before that, there was only one pontoon bridge since the early 1990s , which was reserved for vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tonnes. The single-lane Marchbrücke was built in a construction period of two years and is 132 meters long. To allow larger ships to pass, the middle section can be raised 1.6 meters.
