The Silvrettastraße is a former federal highway in Austria . Today it is known as the Landesstraße Paznauntalstraße  ( B 188 ) in Tyrol and Montafoner Straße  ( L 188 ) in Vorarlberg .

It runs over a length of 63.6 km from Pians ( B 171 ) in the Tyrolean Inn Valley over the Paznaun ( Ischgl , Galtür ), over the Bielerhöhe through the Silvretta into the Montafon ( Schruns ) to Bludenz ( L 190 ) in Vorarlberg .

The Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße connects Tyrol with Vorarlberg from Galtür to Partenen and is toll road. The Bielerhöhe at 2037  m forms the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The road is a popular scenic route in the Alps and leads past reservoirs over several bends. It is closed in the winter months and for caravans in general.

history

The western section of the route between Bludenz and Schruns was declared a rival road by the state law of February 3, 1873 . In Austrian legal language, competition refers to the joint financing of a project by various institutions, each of which assumes a percentage of the maintenance costs specified by law. In this case it took over

those construction and maintenance costs that were not covered by toll revenues.

The subsequent section between Schruns and Partenen was expanded from 1901 as part of a state road construction program. On the planned construction costs amounting to 248,300 guilders participated

  • the Austrian Empire with 35%
  • the state of Vorarlberg with 37%
  • the neighboring communities with 28%

From 1913 onwards, the section from Partenen to Zeinisjoch was also to be expanded, with construction costs of 132,000 guilders being financed 70% from the state budget, 25% from the state budget and 5% from the neighboring communities. In 1925 the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße was built by Vorarlberger Illwerke , initially as a pure construction and maintenance road for the power plant group in Vermunt ( Silvrettasee / Vermuntsee / Vermuntwerk ). It was not until 1954 that the construction road was opened to public traffic and called the Silvretta High Alpine Road . It was expanded to two lanes over its entire length in 1961.

The Paznauntal Straße to Galtür belonged to the network of federal highways in Austria since January 1st, 1950 , the western section of the Paznauntal Straße belonged to the network of federal highways in Austria only since September 1st, 1971. On May 15, 2002 the name of the Tyrolean state parliament was changed to Silvrettastraße , giving the street a continuous name.

With the dissolution of the federal highway system, the following renaming became effective:

  • On October 11, 2006 the name of the Tyrolean state parliament was changed back to Paznauntalstraße .
  • On May 3, 2007, the Vorarlberg state government changed the name to Montafoner Straße .

The street now consists of three streets again.

Like the other former federal highways, Silvrettastraße was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002 it has been under state administration. In the other federal states, the conventional street name is continued with B - in Vorarlberg, however, the streets taken over by the federal government have an L in the name like all other Vorarlberg regional streets .
