Eichenbrunn is a cadastral community in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria .

geography

Eichenbrunn is located in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria at an altitude of 274 m. Eichenbrunn is a street village directly on Laaer Straße B6 with around 350 inhabitants (main and secondary residence).

The Zaya flows through the place in an easterly direction. This rises on the northern slope of the Leiserberg and is extraordinarily strengthened in Eichenbrunn by two water-rich springs at the foot of the church hill. Because of their richness, these sources were referred to as the actual origin of the zaya in 1833.

history

During excavations for the Eichenbrunn bypass, traces of settlement in the Middle Neolithic and Late Bronze Age were documented. Among the finds from the Lengyel period, a large number of stone implements - especially flint tools - made from a wide variety of raw material varieties that were largely imported.

The following legend is passed down about the settlement by Franconia and Bavaria (around the year 1000 AD):

“At the time when Heinrich I (Austria) from Babenberg (994-1018) ruled over the East Mark, an Irish prince named Koloman moved through this area to the Holy Land. He rested at the spring under the large oak tree at the foot of the church hill. Then he went to what is now Stockerau, where he was arrested on June 12, 1012 because they did not understand his language and thought he was a spy. On October 13, 1012, he was tortured to death. When later found out about his miracles, the first settlers named the place where the saint had rested the name Eichenbrunn. "

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1203. Namely in a document from Klosterneuburg Abbey , where a Berthold von Nussdorf bequeathed four vineyards to the Abbey - signature of the "Albertus de Aichenprun".

The first school was mentioned in 1664 with its first school teacher Hummel. The current school building (now used as a cultural center) was built in 1883.

On September 17 and 18, 1811, the German romantic poet Joseph von Eichendorff visited the place on his trip to Grus (s) bach ( Moravia ). He describes this in his diaries:

“(...) After 1 o'clock we fed in the village of Eichenbrunn, where we ate a plentiful meal in the small room of the inn. (...). After his stay in Grussbach Castle with Count Hardegg, he returned to Eichenbrunn on September 18, 1811: '(...) we left beautiful Grussbach again at 8 o'clock in the morning, again ate an overly frugal lunch in Eichenbrunn (long conversation with the landlady who has to sit down with us in the room), then drove over the high mountain Oberleiß (...) '. "

Until 1826 there was a huge oak tree at the foot of the parish church, about 1000 years old according to experts. The remains were completely fragmented by a storm. At this point there is now an oak that is almost 200 years old.

Conveniently located on Laaer Strasse , there was an Eichenbrunn toll station from 1842 onwards, where the customary toll had to be paid. Further toll stations were only in Laa an der Thaya and in Wetzleinsdorf.

In the last days of the Second World War , between April 22nd and May 8th 1945, Eichenbrunn was the scene of violent and changeable position battles between troops of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army , in which numerous buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged.

politics

Eichenbrunn currently provides Rudolf Pfennigbauer, the deputy mayor of the Gnadendorf community . Eichenbrunn sends four municipal councilors to the municipal council of the larger municipality.

The last mayor before the municipal consolidation in 1971 was Michael Seidl. Before that, Alois Blum was mayor of Eichenbrunn from 1955 to 1970.

Economy and Infrastructure

The place was once strongly characterized by agriculture. Especially the potato cultivation with the well-known "Hellen Eichenbrunnern" is important because of the special qualities. From 1958 to 1980 the Raiffeisen warehouse in Laa an der Thaya ran a potato transfer point in Eichenbrunn. The building was later taken over by an antique dealer.

The once very important cultivation of carrots has declined sharply. In the first half of the 20th century, the Eichenbrunners even received the nickname "Murknzipf" ("Murkn" is the vernacular name for carrots).

The Kurt Gass company has had great regional importance in the construction of high-voltage electrical lines since the 1950s . The company was taken over by Kraus from Mistelbach, which continued to operate in Eichenbrunn until 2020.

The last "Greißler" (department store Madner) closed his business at the end of 2018. Aloisia Schöfmann also ran a department store until 2004. The Gasthaus Schöfmann closed its doors in 2005. A second inn in the village existed until the end of the 1980s. The butcher shop Rudolf Pfennigbauer is still in the third generation running a specialist shop in Eichenbrunn and ensuring local supplies.

Worth seeing

Two cellars in the "Trift" cellar lane

In Eichenbrunn from 2009 to 2015 the "Christmas tree throwing" was held every year on the Sunday after Epiphany . The Eichenbrunn Beautification Association has thus developed a new sport in Austria that has already found many imitators. There are now numerous TV reports about the Eichenbrunn Christmas tree throwing. Helmut Schöfmann from Röhrabrunn holds the record with an impressive 14.17 m.

The "Kolomani Cellar Festival" has been taking place in the Kellergasse (Trift) of Eichenbrunn since 2015 . More than 30 exhibitors present their products in the press houses and in front of the cellars.

Since 2008, the “Sautrogrennen” of the Eichenbrunn youth has attracted many visitors to the “Arena Eichenbrunn”. In the Schwemme (village pond) at the foot of the parish church, teams of two compete against each other in Sautrögen. In mid-July this arena is transformed into a competition venue. In summer and winter the flood has almost the same temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius, due to the numerous underground springs and inflows. The flood does not freeze over.

The Eichenbrunn parish church is dedicated to Saint Koloman.

There are a total of five listed objects in Eichenbrunn, see list of listed objects in Gnadendorf

An adventure children's playground, a newly renovated cellar lane and the Blauburger bike path offer games, relaxation and sport. There are overnight accommodations through a room rental company in town.

Dialect standard "Eichenbrunnerisch"

The regional dialect was recorded in the Weinviertel dialect lexicon by Michael Staribacher with the standard "Eichenbrunnerisch", analogous to Oxford-English as the standard in English.

Rare custom

Get red eggs

In the night from Easter Sunday to Easter Monday, the custom of "fetching red eggs" was practiced in Eichenbrunn. The local boys visited the unmarried girls at night and “asked for a red egg”. Until the 1970s, all that was done was knocking on the window, and the girls only passed the Easter eggs to the boys through the window. From the late 1970s onwards, the doors were opened and the boys were allowed to sit in the kitchen. It is an old custom that has been in place for generations. Without exception, every guy gets a red egg that night. There are only differences in the amount of time a girl devotes to the boy to show such special sympathy. The custom was practiced until the 2000s.

Egg dish food

For generations there has been the custom of “Eierspeis-Essen” on Ash Wednesday, which was reserved exclusively for boys until the 1980s. The eggs come from the parade of the carnival jesters on the previous carnival Saturday. Eggs and lard are collected, which are processed into egg dishes (scrambled eggs) in large pans on Ash Wednesday. Bread is traditionally eaten with it. To this day, the "egg meal" on Ash Wednesday is an integral part of the tradition in Eichenbrunn. This custom is otherwise only known in Hanfthal near Laa an der Thaya .

On the other hand, the custom of “smoked food” on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday has died out. In addition to the eggs for the egg meal, the wandering carnival jesters also collected bacon or smoked meat in a large sack on Mardi Gras. A week later this was eaten with bread in the inn. This custom has been lost since the 1990s.

Association

Local music Eichenbrunn

There has been evidence of local music in Eichenbrunn since 1930, although local music bands were spoken of earlier. Officially as an association (Central Register of Associations ZVR 773368810), local music was newly founded in 2005. In the concert music evaluations of the Lower Austrian Brass Music Association, the local music Eichenbrunn regularly competes in level A with great success. In 2018, the Eichenbrunn local music started for the first time in level B. Lena Wachter is the conductor, and Josef Schöfmann is chairman.

Volunteer firefighter

The voluntary fire brigade was founded on November 26th, 1893. At the suggestion of the then mayor Leopold Staribacher, a fire brigade with 30 men was founded. The then senior teacher Leopold Ballek was elected captain. It was decided to buy "a twin-jet land sprayer and equipment for 20 men".

A volunteer fire brigade, which is very active today, with more than 50 active members, relies primarily on training in order to be able to carry out the numerous technical missions on the B6 federal highway. Christian Schöfmann is in command.

The youth fire brigade is an essential part of the Zwentendorf-Pyhra competition team, which won the state in 2014. In addition, the girls from the Eichenbrunn fire brigade youth in the Asparn-Eichenbrunn competition team won the Lower Austrian youth fire brigade competitions in 2019 in both silver and bronze.

Beautification club

Founded in 1985 with the first chairman Koloman Krickl. In addition to the numerous work assignments (mowing the lawn, decorating flowers, sweeping), the Beautification Association organized the “Christmas tree throwing” from 2009 to 2015 and the “Kolomani basement lane festival” every year since 2015. The founding chairman was called Koloman Krickl (1985–2009). The current chairman has been Michael Staribacher since 2009.

Theater club

As early as 1923, theater was played in Eichenbrunn. In 1951 the great Kolomani consecration game took place. From 1977 until 2004 there were theater performances every year after Christmas. In the beginning there was farmer teasing, later the troupe shifted to tabloid comedies or Nestroy antics under the direction of Alfred Denner or Johann Staribacher. "The sloppy shamrock", "The model husband", "Scandal in Lobodau" or "Pension Schöller" were some of the highlights in the theater history of the amateur stage.

Youth Eichenbrunn

A non-party youth has dedicated itself to the revitalization of the place. In addition to organizing the Sautrogrennen, the young people especially uphold the old customs, such as the "egg meal" on Ash Wednesday or the parade of the carnival jesters on Carnival Saturday. The current chairman is Samuel Bergmann.
