The Leoganger Steinberge are a mountain group of the Northern Limestone Alps in the Eastern Alps in the state of Salzburg . They are located between the Loferer Tal, Saalfelden and Leogang and, together with the Loferer Steinberge to the northwest, form two mountain ranges that are separated by the Römersattel ( 1202 m ), but are defined as a single subgroup in the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps ( Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge ). The Leoganger Steinberge are separated from the Kitzbühel Alps to the south and the Steinerne Meer to the east by incised valleys. Typical for the Steinberge are plateau poles with steep slopes and strongly undulating high cirques.
As a typical karst mountain range , the Leogang Steinberge are also criss-crossed by numerous caves . The most famous of these is the Lamprechtsofen, which is over 50 km long and is located directly on the main road between Lofer and Saalfelden . A remarkable rock formation is the Melkerloch in the southeast face of the Birnhorn.
The Birnhorn forms the highest elevation at 2634 m . The Hochfilzen military training area of the Austrian Armed Forces is located in the west of the Leoganger Steinberge.
