The Urslau (also Urslaubach , also Urschlau ) is a mountain river and valley of the same name in the Salzburg district of Zell am See (Pinzgau). The 20 km long tributary of the Saalach forms the border between the Berchtesgaden Alps and the western Dienten mountains .

Run and valley landscape

The Urslau near Hinterthal

The Urslau rises between the Hochkönig massif and the Steinernes Meer , below the mountain cut of the Hohen Tore ( 2293  m ) and Brandhorn ( 2610  m ) and Poneck ( 2570  m ), in the area of the Enzenalm . In addition to the Brandhorn– Hochseiler ridge , the Übergossene Alm plateau glacier forms the watershed wall between the Blühnbachtal near Werfen and the Pinzgauer Urslau. In the upper reaches it flows together with the Schneekarbach from the Hochkönig and, as a torrent, quickly overcomes many meters in altitude.

From Hinterthal , where the road climbs to the Filzensattel , it becomes a little quieter, but flows in a narrow valley of particular scenic beauty. The main town of the Urslautal is Maria Alm am Steinernen Meer , where the valley begins to widen from the district of Aberg and takes on a meadow character. Numerous streams, such as Handlergraben (Reiterbach), Jetzbach vom Hundstein in Aberg, Krallerbach (Grießbach) from Selbhorn and Schönfeldspitze in Maria Alm, Pirnbach, Schwarzbach , and the course of the Ritzensee feed the Urslau.

Below Maria Alm it reaches the Saalfelden basin , flows through and straightens the city of Saalfelden ( Jufersbach from the Ramseider Scharte ), where it flows northwest into the Saalach in the cadastral community of Uttenhofen (three-rivers corner with the Leoganger Ache ).

Triefen natural monument

The Triefen an der Urslau in winter 2006

About 30 to 60 minutes from the input of the local part Hinterthal removed can be the spectacle of Oozing (in Salzburg dialect Triafnfall admirable). The Urslau has dug its streambed through a very hard conglomerate body , through which a horizontal spring horizon runs. This geological peculiarity enables spring water to reach the surface about two to three meters above the Urslau creek bed due to a water-impermeable layer of rock and pour into the Urslau as a special kind of waterfall in the form of a 100-meter-long curtain made of innumerable pearling water strings. This phenomenon occurs regardless of the weather. The permanent presence of water enables a lush growth of numerous water-loving plants. 39 deciduous and 16 liverwort species as well as 96 fern and vascular plant species have already been identified. Because of the uniqueness and the great importance of natural phenomena for ecology , species protection , science and landscape aesthetics, the Triefen was declared a natural monument according to the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act in November 2001 with a notice from the Salzburg nature conservation authority.

Events

On August 12, 2002, at night, a storm hit the Pinzgau and turned the Urslau into a raging brook. In the municipality of Maria Alm it stepped out of its creek bed at the Torah bridge, flooded the Steegsiedlung massively and severely damaged parts of the village of Maria Alm through blockages . Maria Alm and Saalfelden were declared disaster areas. With extensive use of large equipment, the damage in Maria Alm could be limited to 2.5 million euros . Tourist development

Fishing in the Urslau

Fish stocking in the Urslau in spring 2003 between Maria Alm and Saalfelden

Fish such as rainbow trout , brown trout and char are found in Urslau not only because of their high oxygen content .

Brown trout and rainbow trout can be fished. Allowed bait and fishing gear are artificial fly, artificial spinning bait, natural fly, bottom line and troll. The fishing rights are held by two private individuals and are entered in the fishing book of the federal state of Salzburg . Fishing permits are almost exclusively granted through lease agreements . One of the tenants is the Maria Alm Tourist Association , which also sells fishing permits (half-day and day permits) to guests.

The annual fishing permit is only available from the Salzburg State Fisheries Association. In order to be able to reissue an annual fishing permit, it is necessary to successfully pass the statutory fishing examination according to the Salzburg fishing law. Proof of aptitude for fishing is also deemed to have been provided if the applicant has passed an aptitude test equivalent to the fishing test in another federal state or state or has met other requirements. The state government recognizes the equivalence in individual cases or by ordinance in general.

The season lasts only a few months because of the long-lasting snowmelt in spring , but also the annual thunderstorms in the summer months.

Running on the Urslau

In Saalfelden there is the Pestkreuzrunde, a 4.6 km long signposted running route that partly leads along the Urslau.
