The Hundstein , also Hoher Hundstein , is a 2117  m above sea level. A. high mountain near Zell am See in Pinzgau (state of Salzburg). It is the highest point within the Salzburg Slate Alps and belongs to the subgroup of the Dienten Mountains .

Location and landscape

The Hundstein massif lies east of Lake Zell and opposite the exit of the Fuscher Valley (with the Grossglockner High Alpine Road ) into the Salzach Valley .

As a mountain group, the Hundstein with its neighboring peaks Hochkaser ( 2017  m ), Schwalbenwand ( 2011  m ) and Gschwandtnerberg ( 1612  m ) occupy the entire western half of the Dientener Berge (grass mountains). The boundaries are formed by the Zeller basin to the Kitzbühel Alps  - the Urslau with the main town Maria Alm to the Berchtesgaden Alps  - the Filzensattel and the Dientenertal ( Dienten ) to the remaining grass mountains - and the Salzachtal with Taxenbach and Bruck on the Großglocknerstrasse to the Hohe Tauern .

The main summit itself forms the boundary point of Maria Alm, Zell am See, Bruck and Taxenbach.

Terrain and development

The development of the Hundstein began at the end of the 19th century. After the Alm section of the Austrian Tourist Club was founded in 1889 by Johann Moßhammer, a master blacksmith and enthusiastic alpinist from Maria Alm , the construction of paths and climbing facilities began. In 1897 the Statzerhaus was built on the summit of the Hundstein, which, however, fell victim to an arson attack in 1898 and was rebuilt that same year. The Statzerhaus still exists today as a managed refuge of the Austrian Tourist Club. It is a popular base for several long-distance hiking trails , such as the Central Alpine Trail , the Ruperti Trail and the Arnoweg .

Both the summit of the Hundstein with the panorama over the surrounding mountains and the Hundsteinsee ( 1891  m ) to the east are very popular hiking and mountain biking destinations in the snow-free season, and the mountain is a ski touring area in winter.

Several flat to gently sloping mountain ridges, typical of the slate Alps, extend from the summit in a star shape:

  • Via Schönwieskopf ( 1994  m ) to the Schwalbenwand in a north-west direction to Maria Alm or Maishofen
  • to Langegg ( 1899  m ) north to Sonnberg near Maria Alm
  • to Hahneckkogel ( 1857  m ) south-west to Thumersbach or Bruck
  • to the Pfarrachhöhe ( 1922  m ) and Gschwandtnerberg in a south-easterly direction to Taxenbach
  • to the Hochkasen heading east (main ridge of the Dientner Mountains) to Dienten am Hochkönig

Since hiking trails run on these ridges, which stretch just above the tree line, the Hundstein can be reached from all sides without difficulty. The ascent can be shortened with the lifts of the Aberg ski area in Maria Alm.

Hundstein-Ranggeln (Jakobiranggeln)

On the Hundstein held every year to Jakobi the Hundstoaranggeln even Jakobiranggeln , instead, a regionally prestigious wrestling ( Ranggeln ) , the winner the title Hagmoar (pronounced "Hogmohr", Hag-Meier ', an ancient office of judge in a border dispute) is .

The Jakobiranggeln has been part of the intangible world heritage since 2010 , as declared by UNESCO, and is thus on the list of national cultural assets .
