Culture and sights
The Maria Alm pilgrimage church, the church in Hinterthal and the Gasteg chapel are located in Maria Alm. The oldest buildings include the Almerwirt from 1530 and the Vorderjetzbachgut from the 14th century with a brick house from 1560.
- Customs
Every year on Bartholomäitag , the Almer pilgrimage leads across the Steinerne Meer to St. Bartholomäus am Königssee , on a pilgrimage route with natural stone steps.
School system
The first traces can be traced back to 1539 when the vicariate was founded. The school was held first in the shoemaker's house, later from 1818 in the sexton's house.
With the estate of Ilgenkrämer in 1887, the Hallein school sisters were able to set up a branch for their school. The opening was in 1889, the construction of the new schoolhouse in 1893 - until 1938 there were two classes. Lessons began again in 1945, but ended in 1950 due to a lack of teaching staff.
Healthcare
In the 17th and 18th centuries there were several outbreaks of dysentery, in 1885 ten children died of diphtheria. Life expectancy around 1700 was 43 years, in 1950 it was 60 years. Birth mortality decreased from 80% initially to 10% by 1950.
In 1679 a lifeguard was mentioned for the first time at the healing spring of the Gasteg chapel; the healing spring contains little radium. In 1777, a teacher Johann Georg Aglassinger is also mentioned as Bader and Chirurgus.
Farms and manor houses
Maria Alm owns the Vorderjetzbachhof and that of the Erdstadel farmers. The Poschengut is of particular importance:
The Poschengut, also called Poschgut, was a former hunting lodge at the head of the Hinterthal valley and was built around 1545 under Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg . The portal of the house is made of marble and is designed in the so-called donkey - back style. For a long time the trophies from the hunt were not only placed in the castle, but also on the outside wall of the house. As the name Urslau suggests, the area was inhabited by bears for a long time , which makes the archbishop's zeal for hunting in this valley understandable.
Various owners have owned it over the centuries. The Rainer family acquired the house and the property through the marriage of Andre Rainer at the end of the 18th century to a born Thumb, whose parents were the last previous owners. The Rainer family achieved considerable prosperity and was known as the richest grain farmers in the whole valley. Grain was grown here under the shelter of the Stone Sea. The Rainer couple had fifteen living children together. Since the industrial revolution triggered the death of farmers in the 19th century , Rainer also had to sell his property. Most of the family left the valley and was scattered in all directions. The former owner of the Gasthof Botenwirt in Hinterthal Alois was still a "real Rainer".
Rainer sold his land and the house for 48,000 guilders to the fertilizer producer Hermann Schmidtmann from Schmalkalden in Germany. He bought many farms, was the owner of Grubhof Castle near Lofer and also owned a potash mine in Germany. Incidentally, descendants of the Rainer family still owned a certain amount of assets up to the First World War, but they finally lost it through the necessity to subscribe to war bonds and through the financial loss in the great global economic crisis of 1929. The current owner Schmidtmann changed the agriculture into a modern business and added some farm buildings. The Watermann family took over the house. Originally a path led across the Poschengut area, which had existed as a right of way for centuries. In recent years, however, it has been relocated by Schmidtmann's heirs, so that unfortunately you can no longer walk past the house. The heirs of the Schmidtmann and Watermann family are still the owners of this property and the farm.
Sport and tourism
The first swimming pool was laid out next to the forest house in 1933. There is an ice rifle club in Maria Alm; Jakobirang fishing takes place annually on Hundstein .
Since the 1960s, both summer and mainly winter tourism have brought an enormous boost to the community life, which was previously largely rural. Numerous holiday homes, chalets etc. were built. The former German President Walter Scheel , the family of the chocolate bar producer Mars and the former Formula 1 racing driver Keke Rosberg once had a property near the Urslautal golf club were among the best-known “part-time residents” of the Hinterthal district .
Maria Alm and its districts have an extensive network of transport systems for alpine skiing - including the Simerllift, Schattberglift and Aberg Bergbahnen ski lifts - and belong to Hochkönig's Winterreich, formerly the Hochkönig- Skischaukel , which extends further south-east into the valleys of Dienten and Mühlbach am Hochkönig . In addition, is sledding and cross country skiing possible. In summer, both hiking trails and intensive tours in the mountains of the Steinernes Meer and the Hochkönig, with their peaks up to just under 3000 m above sea level, beckon. A.
A school ski race is also held annually by the Maria Alm elementary school.
The Hochkönigman , one of the most demanding mountain marathons in Austria, has been held since 2015 .
The Federal Sports and Leisure Center (BSFZ) Hintermoos of the Ministry of Education has been located in the Hintermoos district since the 1960s.
