Life

After her first music lessons from her father, an organist, Rosl Schwaiger took piano and singing lessons at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . In 1940 she was a member of the Salzburg State Theater ; here the singer had one of her first great successes as " Queen of the Night ". Rosl Schwaiger subsequently received engagements at the Volksoper Vienna , Theater Basel and Bregenz as well as at the Vienna State Opera .

In 1952, artistic director Rudolf Hartmann brought Rosl Schwaiger as the first coloratura soprano to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and to the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz . In the last two theaters her partners were u. a. Harry Friedauer , Marianne Schech , Erika Köth , Martha Kunig-Rinach and Sari Barabas . She is unforgettable for the Munich audience (and far beyond) in two roles: as Papagena in the legendary production of the opera Die Zauberflöte from 1956 under the direction of Hans Knappertsbusch in the Prinzregententheater in Munich and as Adina in Gaetano Donizetti's opera Der Liebestrank , together with her colleague Benno Kusche , who was on the program in the Theater am Gärtnerplatz in 1957.

At the Salzburg Festival in 1945 she sang one of the soubrette roles , the Maid Blonde, in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail , in 1946 Barbarina in Figaro and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier . She was one of the most popular singers at the Salzburg Festival in the early / mid-1950s.

Every now and then Rosl Schwaiger made a detour to the operetta . In 1952 she took on the leading female role in the WDR production of the operetta Die Geisha by Sidney Jones , directed by Franz Marszalek . In 1966 Rosl Schwaiger, meanwhile appointed Bayerische Kammersängerin , sang the role of Maria at the world premiere of Cesar Bresgen's “Salzburg Passion” in the Great Festival Hall of Salzburg.

In 1954 Rosl Schwaiger undertook a tour through North America , on which she was frenetically celebrated. Three years later she sang very successfully at the Glyndebourne Festival the Blondchen in The Abduction from the Seraglio , Papagena in The Magic Flute and the Naiad in Ariadne auf Naxos . Two years before her death, the artist, already weakened by illness, who died of leukemia at the age of 52, gave recitals in Greece and Turkey . She was buried in Maria Alm in the Salzburg region.
