Franz Marszalek (born August 2, 1900 in Breslau ( Silesia ), † October 28, 1975 in Cologne ) was a German conductor and composer .

Life

Marszalek studied at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University in Breslau . After his first years of musical activity in Silesia (as a cinema and theater conductor and as Kapellmeister at Schlesische Funkstunde AG, the Breslauer Rundfunk), from 1933 he worked in Berlin as a conductor and sought-after arranger (also for sound films). During the war years he worked for the "Reichsrundfunk".

From 1949 to 1965 he was the conductor of the Cologne Radio Orchestra . With this orchestra he set accents for the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR) in the field of operetta , light classical music and upscale entertainment music ; For example, he cultivated the work of his friend Eduard Künneke intensively . He was particularly committed to supporting Leo Fall and Walter Wilhelm Goetze, whom he greatly appreciated . He presented early complete recordings of The Gypsy Baron and Carnival in Rome ( Johann Strauss ), The Land of Smiles and Paganini ( Franz Lehár ) and Love in Triangles (Walter Wilhelm Goetze), all with Peter Anders . Franz Marszalek was not only active in radio and television, but also in the record industry. His son was the cameraman Michael Marszalek (1930-2014). Marszalek's grave is located in the Westfriedhof in Cologne .
