action

Act 1 - In Knipperling's shop and workshop

The action takes place in a city in Germany , somewhere in Franconia , shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War . At the beginning of the plot, master tailor Knipperling checks with his son Hannes whether the order for the new costume for the local mistress, the noble Miss Carola von Ebernstein, has been properly carried out. Hildegunde, Fraulein von Ebernstein's maid, announces the imminent arrival of her mistress. Hildegunde and Hannes get into an argument. Hildegunde found out that Hannes is not only courting her, but also her cousin, the maid Rosamunde. However, Hannes succeeds in reconciling Hildegunde. An unknown young, handsome man appears in the town square and immediately compliments all the girls. He calls himself Mucki Nix. Shortly afterwards, the stranger enters Knipperling's workshop and asks for a job as a tailor, although he has neither papers nor a journeyman's letter to show. Nevertheless, master tailor Knipperling wants to try it with him. Mucki Nix quickly becomes friends with Hannes. Mucki Nix reports that he has lost all his fortune in the game and is now on the run from his creditors. Hannes tells him about his problems with his two chambermaids. While Hannes is preparing a meal for the hungry Mucki Nix, the girls in town appear and decorate Mucki Nix with elegant clothes. Carola von Ebernstein enters the shop to try on her costume. She immediately falls in love with Mucki, who also compliments her. She asks Mucki Nix to personally deliver the finished costume to Gut Ebernstein today. Rosamunde appears and also gets into an argument with Hannes. However, Hannes can also reconcile Rosamunde by promising her to make two evening dresses especially for her. A town clerk enters the marketplace and proclaims a new law: In order to remedy the excess of women after the lost war, every man should be allowed to marry two women. Hannes now decides to marry Hildegunde and Rosamunde and to have a three-person marriage.

Act 2 - At Ebernstein Estate

The wedding of the respective bride trio is celebrated on Ebernstein. Carola and her uncle Kunibert greet those willing to marry. Hannes is also there with Rosamunde and Hildegunde. But his marriage is not a lucky star; there is constant quarreling between the three spouses. Kunibert has since found out that the strange young man bears a striking resemblance to Count Nepomuk von Westernhain, who owes him money. Carola has also discovered the stranger's identity in the meantime, but wants to remain true to him. The two lovers admit their love again. At the festival, Carola and Nepomuk announce their engagement. However, there is a scandal when the Augsburg master tailor Flock steps in and asserts his claims. Mucki did not pay for three costumes for his wife. Mucki now admits that he is already married and has tried in vain to divorce his unfaithful wife. But his assurances are no longer of any use to Mucki; Carola turns away from him.

3rd act - on Gut Ebernstein

Two months later. While playing chess , Carola learns from the chief judge that Mucki's divorce decree is now final. Mucki has meanwhile started working with master tailor Knipperling to work off his debts and to satisfy his creditors. In the meantime he has also developed into a select expert on women's clothing and a master of his trade. Carola orders Mucki to the castle and asks Mucki to deliver her selected silk fabrics for a wedding dress. In the meantime, Hannes is completely disillusioned with the developments in his three-man marriage, especially since both women have refused to accept him. Hildegunde has also turned to another admirer. Rosamunde and Hannes discover their feelings for a mutual togetherness. Mucki brings the fabrics over to Carola and she presents him with his divorce decree. The two lovers now also find each other. Kunibert forgives his nephew-in-law's debts. The law on marriage for three has now also been repealed, as all couples of three had complained.

Goetzes late work Liebe im Dreiklang (first performance in 1950), like his earlier operettas Adrienne (1926) and Schach dem König (1935), belonged to the type of operettas with a historical subject . With his compositions, Goetze tried to set a musical counterpoint to the hit and number operettas that came into fashion in the 1920s . Larger musical ensembles (solos with choir, duets , terzets , quartets and quintets , often also with choir) and elaborated finals characterize his operettas, including love in a triad . In contrast to Goethe's earlier operettas, the operetta Liebe im Dreiklang was not able to achieve any lasting success on the stage and has since been almost completely forgotten. The frivolous and suggestive topic of polygamy led to protests from church circles before the premiere. The failure is probably also due to the fact that after the end of the Second World War many women actually lived without men and the time was not yet ripe for an ironic approach to the subject.

In June 1951, under the musical direction of Franz Marszalek , a connoisseur of Goetzes operettas, a complete recording of the operetta Liebe im Dreiklang was made on Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne . The German tenor Peter Anders took over the role of Mucki Nix at short notice after the originally planned Austrian Karl Friedrich had to cancel unexpectedly due to illness. Irmgard Först and Paul Bürks were hired as speakers for the main roles . This radio recording has since been re-released as a CD on several labels ; Excerpts and musical highlights have also appeared on CD.
