The age of the church cannot be precisely determined. The fact is that it must have already existed under Archbishop Pilgrim II, as she mentioned it in his fief book in 1374. In 1429 Pope Martin V issued a letter of indulgence written by hand to the church .

The main nave of today's church was rebuilt around 1500 and consecrated in 1508 by Bishop Berthold Pürstinger . The slender church tower on the west side also dates from this time. At 83 meters, it is the highest in the state of Salzburg (the cathedral towers in Salzburg are only 82 m). The bell chamber shows the year 1518.

Originally (around 1540) the later sacristan's house was the rectory. It was not until 1740 that the current rectory was brought into its present form as a two-story house. Because of the pilgrims, foreign priests always had to be accommodated, which is why the house was so spacious. A valuable library with works from the 16th century, with woodcuts and copperplate engravings, is kept in it.

In 1955 the rectory was adapted to modern requirements.

The Gasteg chapel stands on the old road to Saalfelden on a small hill. It has an octagonal floor plan. A chapel is said to have existed here as early as 1546. It is built over a spring - the Augenbründl. According to legend, the Mother of God appeared here to a blind woman and made her aware of the source. The woman regained her sight through washing.

West of the church on the cemetery wall is the Palestine Chapel. It was built in 1872 by a certain Johann Ebner to commemorate his trip to the Holy Land in 1856, so that the many souvenirs he had brought with him from the Holy Land and Rome could be displayed.

The chapel is made of granite and slate, has a turret made of tuff and a baroque representation of the resurrection on the front.

Urslaustraße 27 KG
location
: Hinterthal
Around 1610 a farmer built a wooden chapel here in the rearmost Urslau, on the Au. In 1678 the farmers helped together and built a somewhat larger, brick chapel. In 1681 this received the measurement license for weekday masses. It was called the Gallic Chapel because it was dedicated to St. Gallus was consecrated. This saint was a very good fit for Hinterthal, because at that time the area - so it is said - suffered badly from a bear plague.

The current church is a simple, rectangular structure and also has rectangular windows. The tower as a roof turret has a nicely curved top. The entrance is covered by a broad, brick porch called the Obsten.

The rectory in Hinterthal is very similar to that in Maria Alm. Since the church is only a branch church of Maria Alm, the building is no longer used as a rectory.
