The first written mention of the church comes from 1409, when it received a letter of indulgence as a branch church from Piesendorf . However, it can be assumed with certainty that a church existed much earlier, after it has been handed down that archbishop Odalbert handed over goods to the priest Engelbert and his son Luitfred in "Chataprunin" as early as 931.

The church stands on a rock spur and so towers above all surrounding buildings. It was not until 1722 that the wooden tower was exchanged for a brick one and in 1736 the altars were renewed. The church got its current appearance in 1899, when further renovations and additions were made.
