The Hochkönigman is an ultramarathon in Austria that has been held annually in June since 2015 . With start and finish in Maria Alm, it leads largely on hiking trails in the area around the Hochkönig , with a route length of around 84 km and 4,900 positive meters in altitude, it is one of the most demanding mountain marathons among trail running competitions in Austria and has been the venue for Austrian championships every year since then .

route

With a few exceptions, the entire route runs on existing nature trails. The circuit that starts in Maria Alm first leads to the Arthurhaus at 1,502 m above sea level. A. , followed by a descent to Mühlbach am Hochkönig . It continues over the Schneebergkreuz (1,936 m) to Dienten am Hochkönig , followed by an ascent to Hochkaser at 2,017 m. At this altitude, it goes over the Hundstein (the Statzerhaus is the highest point on the route at 2,117 m) to the Schwalbenwand before descending to the destination in Maria Alm.

In 2019, the route was changed due to the snow conditions at great heights, with the scope remaining almost the same at 84 km and 5,300 meters in altitude.

Alternative competitions

In addition to the Endurance Trail with a length of 84.24 km and 4,916 meters in altitude, there is also the possibility of competing on shorter routes. In addition to the Easy Trail (9.3 km, 1,500 meters in altitude) and the Cross Warrior , an obstacle course as an individual and team competition as well as children, the following competitions are also held:

  • Marathon Trail : Route like the Marathon Trail, but without the section to Arthurhaus and over the Schneeberg, thus a length of 46.94 km with 2,751 vertical meters
  • Speed ​​Trail : Start and finish also in Maria Alm, but route over the Massingsattel to Bilgerirast, thus 23.57 km with 1,441 meters of altitude
  • x cross : Since 2017 an obstacle course (mud ditches, climbing hurdles, mud ditches, etc.) over 6 km with 320 vertical meters, which can also be selected in a team of two over half the distance. In addition to Vienna , Obertauern and Podersdorf am See, this competition is part of the x cross run tour.
  • Skyrace : The 26 km long competition with an altitude difference of 2,300 meters was held for the first time in 2018.
  • Easy Trail : The shortest competition for adults with 9.3 km and 300 vertical meters was held for the first time in 2019.
  • Kids Trail : The flat circuit over 500 m for children and teenagers between 6 and. 16 years (depending on age between one and three rounds) was held for the first time in 2019.

Regulations

The regulations stipulate that the participants must have personal autonomy in the mountains (two points according to the ITRA criteria for participation in the Endurance Trail). Depending on the competition, it is compulsory to carry the specified equipment.

Championships

Since the beginning of this event, national and international championships have been held annually.
In 2015, 2016 and 2018 the Austrian Championships in the Marathon Trail were held. In 2017 and 2019, the Austrian Endurance Trail Championships took place.
All three competitions are also part of the Austrian Trail Running Cup.

Others

Successful participation within the given times will award four creditable points for the Endurance Trail and three for the Marathon Trail for participation in the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc .
The organizer is Thomas Bosnjak , chairman of the Austrian Trail Running Association (ATRA).
The “ ISF Qualified Race label ”, a seal of approval from the international Skyrunning Federation, was awarded for the Skyrace competition . In 2020 the event will take place between September 4th and 6th.
