Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc
The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (abbreviated UTMB ) is an ultra-marathon that runs counter-clockwise around the Mont-Blanc group on trails from Chamonix .
First held in 2003 and organized by Trailers du Mont Blanc , it is one of the most demanding mountain marathons in the world with a route length of approx. 172 km, more than 10,000 meters of incline to be overcome and a time limit of 46.5 hours . Since 2006, the CCC over 101 km, since 2009 the TDS over 145 km and since 2014 the OCC with 56 km on sections of the UTMB has also been held under the umbrella of the UTMB.
Applicants have “partial autonomy”; H. the runners must have compulsory equipment with them and are only given support at official lab stations.
The La Petite Trotte à Léon (PTL) was created in 2009 for teams of two and three, it has no competitive character. The teams have to independently cover a distance of approx. 300 km and 28,000 vertical meters in just under six days.
route
UTMB
The UTMB essentially follows the Tour du Mont-Blanc long-distance hiking trail . From Chamonix it goes via Les Houches to the first ascent La Charme. Behind Les Contamines-Montjoie , it goes into the high alpine area for the first time, with the Croix du Bonhomme (2479 m) as the highest point. After a descent to the hamlet of Les Chapieux, you reach Italian territory via the Col de la Seigne (2516 m) . Above the Val Veny you reach the Arête Mont Favre (2435 m) and descend over the Col Chécrouit to Courmayeur, which you reach after 80 km. Via the Grand Col Ferret (2537 m) you reach the Swiss Val Ferret . Behind Champex-Lac , which is reached after 125 km, there are still three major climbs to be mastered: to the hamlet of Bovine (1987 m) and the Catogne (2011 m) on Swiss territory and to the Tête aux Vents (2130 m) on French territory .
CCC
The Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix follows the route of the UTMB from Courmayeur.
TDS
The Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie leads south of Mont-Blanc from Chamonix via Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Courmayeur.
OCC
It leads from Orsières via Champex-Lac to Chamonix.
history
At the first event, the total distance was 150 km. Two other competitions took place over 110 km (on the section to Champex-Lac) and over 67 km (on the section to Courmayeur). Over 110 km the British Mark Hartell (15:03:05 h) and the French Irina Malejonock (16:59:51 h) won, over 67 km the French Dominique Bergar (8:13:34 h) and Corinne Favre (9 : 21: 57 h). There were runners from 19 nations at the start.
Although a prescribed number of points from completed ultra-mountain runs is required to participate in the UTMB, the number of interested parties significantly exceeded the 2,300 available starting places in 2006, so that a lottery procedure was introduced and a second race was implemented with the CCC. The TDS competitions followed in 2009 and the OCC in 2014. Over the years, the required starting qualifications have increased in all UTMB competitions and the running routes have been extended.
Due to the onset of bad weather, the UTMB had to be canceled after three hours in 2010 and the CCC for runners in the back field. As a replacement for the UTMB, a shortened race on the course of the CCC, starting point Courmayeur, was offered the next day. The TDS was canceled entirely. Snowfall in 2012 led to a shortening of the UTMB's running distance.
In 2014 the UTMB was included in the Ultra-Trail World Tour , which was held for the first time .
In 2018 runners from 101 nations took part in the UTMB competitions. As in previous years, the traditional mountain running countries France, Italy and Spain were most strongly represented. For the first time, prize money was awarded to the winners of the four competitions.
Elizabeth Hawker is one of the most successful longest distance runner to date with five wins . In the men's category , Kílian Jornet Burgada , François D'Haene and Xavier Thévenard have each recorded three wins. Jornet Burgeda won the UTMB in 2008 at the age of 20 as the youngest participant in the field of runners. In 2013, Rory Bosio was the first woman to be among the 10 fastest participants and came in 7th overall.
The German Anke Drescher and the French Didier Delmontez are the only two runners who successfully participated in all UTMB competitions from 2003 to 2019.
