The Arthurhaus is located at the foot of the Mandlwand on the southeast flank of the Hochkönig massif in the municipality of Mühlbach am Hochkönig in the Austrian state of Salzburg . It lies on the Mitterberg saddle at 1505  m above sea level. A. The Arthurhaus has changed over the decades from an alpine economy to a small restaurant into an accommodation facility. This development went hand in hand with the boom and fall of the Mühlbach copper mining ( Arthurstollen ) and the subsequent development of tourism in Mühlbach am Hochkönig.

history

The history of the Arthurhaus goes back to the year 1866. With the purchase of the “Mitterberg Alpe” by the copper union, the construction of a restaurant began. Instead of the old Mitterberg-Alps hut, a brick building was erected, consisting of a kitchen and a guest room on the ground floor and two guest rooms on the first floor. The restaurant was named "Alpenwirtschaft Mitterberg" and was primarily intended as a bar for the many miners working on the Mitterberg . This old structure is still integrated into the Arthurhaus building, which grew to its present size after many renovations and additions.

From 1894, Therese Haggenmüller, born in Jochberg in Tyrol in 1866, leased the Mitterberg Alpine farm and in 1895 married Peter Radacher I (born 1867) from Radochsberg in Rußbach near Abtenau. The marriage gave birth to three children: Peter in 1896, Josel in 1898 and Therese in 1900. From 1894, the alpine economy was also a mountain guide and porter station for conquering the Hochkönig.

In 1921 the inn was rebuilt again, this was done by order of the then main shareholder of Mitterberger-Kupfer-Aktiengesellschaft, Berndorf industrialist Arthur Krupp . The old name Alpenwirtschaft Mitterberg was renamed Arthurhaus in honor of Arthur Krupp.

In 1923, Peter Radacher I founded the first ski school in the State of Salzburg at Arthurhaus. When the Arthurhaus was rebuilt in 1935, a full floor was added to the building instead of the existing mansard, the rooms were made smaller and provided with running cold and warm water and electric heating. In 1952 the first drag lift was built on the Langen Moos practice area. Cobbled together from an old electric motor , a Jeep - differential and a rubber-lined Panzerrad. In 1966 and 1967 there was an extensive extension to the existing Arthurhaus, with a kitchen, dining room and guest room on the 1st and 2nd floor. Another renovation was carried out in 1986.

Surroundings

The house offers a view of the nearby Mandlwand and is a vacation spot for summer and winter. It is the most important starting point for the high mountain tour on the "almost three-thousanders" Hochkönig ( 2941  m ), which takes about 5 to 8 hours. If you set off at dawn , you can experience the sunrise over the Tennengebirge on the opposite side at the foot of the 2600  m high, striking gate pillar .

The local mountain of Arthurhaus is the nearby Hochkeil ( 1782  m ), the summit of which can be reached in an hour and is suitable for children from around 8 years of age. An excursion up to the foot of the Mandlwand, where the Hochkönig plateau breaks off in up to 1000 m high rock walls and towers to the southeast is also possible.

In winter, the Mitterbergalm - the immediate vicinity of the Arthurhaus - is an extensive ski area with a wide variety of ski courses for all levels of ability and age. Within a few kilometers there are 49 lifts and up to 160 km of groomed slopes. The cross-country ski trail and a baby lift operated by the ski school run right next to the former, now expanded alpine hut . The famous ski jump is on the saddle .

The villages of Dienten and Mühlbach can be found in the adjacent Mühlbach Valley to the south . The town of Bischofshofen and the towns of Werfen and Tenneck are located a little to the east, at the confluence of the Mühlbachtal and the main Salzach valley .

A few 100 meters above sea level below and to the east of the Alm as well as in the Mühlbach area was already in the Neolithic from around 3000 BC. Until 1977 copper mining operated.

The sweeping limestone of the Hochkönig, rugged in the south and east , may be the highest point in the Berchtesgaden Alps , but the Arthurhaus is already close to the transition to the gentler Dienten mountains . They represent the easternmost foothills of the Kitzbühel Alps , of which only a few peaks exceed the two-thousand- meter limit.

The Arthurhaus is the stage destination of the Salzburger Almenweg .
