The gate pillar ( 2588  m above sea level ) is a very steep, approximately 500 meter high limestone formation on the eastern flank of the Hochkönig in the Berchtesgaden Alps .

The imposing pillar with a summit cross is located directly north of the ascent path from the 1000 m lower Arthurhaus to the Hochkönig and has a size of about 500 × 200 meters at the base. In an east-west direction it actually looks like a huge column that slowly disappears behind the local horizon when it reaches the high plateau ( Übergossene Alm ).

Its upwardly tapering south wall is almost vertical, while the other sides have average inclinations of about 60 to 80 °.

Structurally, the gate pillar is in front of the mountain ridge , which frames the high plateau of the Hochkönig massif and its plateau glacier on the east side and opens like a rock arena in a semicircle to the pillar and towards the Salzach Valley . The gate pillar lies as the crow flies between the eastern summit of the Schoberköpfe (2666 and 2708  m ) and the Königs- and Bratschenköpf (2630 to 2857  m ). On its rear side (north) it falls to the Eiskar , above which the “ Devil's Church ” with the cave lies on the steep slope of the Schoberköpfe . The elongated, rocky cirque on the south side, at the foot of which the ascent leads past, bears the name Ochsenkar, which is often used in Salzburg .

With good timing - start at dawn - you can experience the sunrise at your foot or when passing the gate pillar , which takes place exactly in the visible section of the sky . When you have climbed up to the side of the gate pillar for about 1 hour, you can see its rounded tip one last time against the background of the Tennengebirge and the morning clouds before it sinks under the Hochkönig plateau.

With over 36 renovated tours, the south wall of the gate column is the most climbed wall on the Hochkönig. Some of them are very popular and are among the top routes in the Northern Limestone Alps: Jolly Joker 9, Opera Vertical 8+, Africa 8.
