Albert Precht (born July 28, 1947 in Bischofshofen , Austria ; † May 8, 2015 in Crete , Greece ) was an Austrian climber and mountaineer.

Life

The state-certified mountain and ski guide was a trained carpenter and worked as a train driver for ÖBB until his retirement . He is the author of several climbing and area guides for the Hochkönig and Tennengebirge areas . Albert Precht carried out more than 1000 first ascents, of which around 70 were free solo, mainly in his home mountains Hochkönig and Tennengebirge, but also in the granite mountains of northern Norway and Corsica as well as in the sandstone of Jordan ( Wadi Rum ) and Oman .

“The number of 800 first ascents had spread in the media through my book“ Thousand and One Way ”. Later on - at least for the public - I stopped counting my first ascents. In the meantime, however, a lot has happened and suddenly there is an anniversary coming up, namely the "thousandth" "

Albert Precht was seen as a representative of strict climbing ethics. He refused to use bolts on first ascents. In this style he got routes up to the upper eighth degree, and even free solo up to the lower eighth degree . Repeaters often rate Precht's difficulty information as clearly too low. In connection with the mostly very poor security, this often led to the failure of repeated attempts. For this the expression has become common in the local climbing scene .

Albert Precht has been rehabilitating some of his routes with bolts since the mid-1990s. In 2003 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the State of Salzburg.

On May 8, 2015 Albert Precht was killed in a climbing accident on the island of Crete, and his long-time rope partner Robert Jölli died with him. In 2014 he published a climbing guide for this region.
