The Schwarzache in Fieberbrunn

The Fieberbrunner Ache , formerly Pillerseer Achen , historically also known as the Albm or Albe , in the upper reaches of the Schwarzache , is a right tributary of the Großache in the Kitzbühel district in Tyrol with a length of around 27 km.

course

The Schwarzache rises on the northern slope of the Spieleckkogel in the Kitzbühel Alps in the municipality of Aurach near Kitzbühel . It then flows in a north-easterly direction through the Hörndlinger Graben, then turns north and flows around the Wildseeloder massif in a wide arc . At Pfaffenschwendt it reaches the valley floor of the Pillerseetal and picks up the Rotache coming from the east. It turns to the northwest, flows through Fieberbrunn and after around 25 kilometers north of the center of St. Johann in Tirol it flows  into the Kitzbüheler Ache, which is called Großache from here on . In the upper reaches to the confluence of the Rotache, the average gradient is around 9%, from there to the confluence only around 1%.

Water flow

The mean discharge at the Almdorf gauge (municipality of St. Johann), 1.35 km above the mouth, is 6.75 m³ / s, which corresponds to a relatively high discharge rate of 40.8 l / s · km². The Fieberbrunner Ache has a nival discharge regime with moderate amplitude. The maximum discharge in May is about four times the minimum in January.

Large parts of St. Johann were repeatedly affected by floods from the Fieberbrunner Ache. In 2014 and 2015, flood protection structures were therefore built in the municipal area.

Economic use

The water of the Fieberbrunner Ache has been used to generate electricity since the beginning of the 20th century. The Walchau power plant in Fieberbrunn now has a bottleneck capacity of 450 kW with a standard energy capacity of 3.6 GWh per year.

environment

In the upper reaches, the Ache is largely natural and in good ecological condition. From Pfaffenschwendt the banks are blocked in parts, in the local area of Fieberbrunn even continuously. The water quality class is II in the upper reaches and I-II in the lower reaches.
