The Pillerseetal is a valley in the Kitzbühel district in Tyrol on the border with Salzburg .

geography

Demarcation

The Pillerseetal is bordered in the east by the Loferer Steinberge and the western foothills of the Leoganger Steinberge ( Kirchel , Buchensteinwand ) and in the west by the Kirchbergstock (also Leoganger and Loferer Steinberge ). In the south the valley borders on the Kitzbühel Alps . As a result, the Pillerseetal lies on the geological boundary between the northern limestone Alps and the mountain groups of the Slate Alps (Tyrolean grass mountains) in the south, made up of Grauwacke . The name Pillerseetal for this area is of more recent origin. Today it not only refers to the valley that drains the Pillersee to Waidring, but also includes the valley from the Fieberbrunner Ache to the Leukental near St. Johann in Tirol . This name arose from the name of the former Hofmark Pillersee, which once comprised the areas of today's communities Hochfilzen , Fieberbrunn , St. Jakob in Haus and St. Ulrich am Pillersee .

Hydrology

Like the neighboring valleys, the Pillerseetal is characterized by a distinctive valley watershed at Flecken (Ortisei municipality) near St. Jakob in Haus , where the two river valleys of the Pillerseetal meet:
The branch to the north drains via Grieselbach  - Pillersee  - Loferbach (Haselbach ) to the Saalach / Salzach , and is bounded by the Öfenschlucht (Teufelsklamm) to the Strubtal of the Loferbach near Waidring .
The valley of the
Rothache  - Fieberbrunner Ache (Pillerseeache), which runs from the Grießenpass to the municipal border between Fieberbrunn and St. Johann in Tirol , is also part of the Pillerseetal. In St. Johann in Tirol the Fieberbrunner Ache in the Leukental flows into the Kitzbüheler Ache, which is called Großache from the mouth . In Bavaria it is called the Tiroler Achen. It flows into the Chiemsee, which is drained over the Alz to the Inn . The Grießenpass creates the transition to the east into Leogang in Salzburg .

Communities

The communities of the Pillerseetal are:

The five municipalities form the Pillerseetal Planning Association of the State of Tyrol with 10,295 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and an area of 234.2 km² (17.2% of which is permanent settlement area). In addition, there is a joint regional management with the neighboring Salzburg municipality of Leogang .

tourism

The valley is used for tourism both in summer (hiking, cycling, swimming, climbing) and in winter (cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, tobogganing, winter hiking).

The Jakobskreuz on the Buchensteinwand was inaugurated as a new tourist attraction on July 27, 2014.

traffic

The southern part is crossed by the Hochkönigstrasse (B 164) and the Salzburg-Tiroler Bahn (both from Saalfelden , the former to St. Johann, the latter to Kitzbühel - Wörgl ), to the north the Pillerseestrasse provides the connection to Loferer Strasse (B 178, Small German corner –Wörgl).
